Carpenter and Marquis
Named to All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference Team
BILLINGS, Mont. – Junior Alira Carpenter
and sophomore Shantell Marquis were named to the all-Great
Northwest Athletic Conference team as announced by the
conference office Wednesday. Carpenter was named to the first team, while Marquis was
named to the honorable mention team.
Carpenter, a native of Lewiston, Mont.,
averaged a team-best 20 points per game this season which was
best in the league and 18th nationally. She also led the team with 191 made field goals and 80
made three-pointers. She broke the school record for career made
three-pointers this season and has 213 for her career. The previous best was 194 set by Amy Winslow. During the season, Carpenter had 16 games of scoring 20
points or more and tallied her career-high with a 33-point
performance against Seattle University, Feb. 16. Heading into her final season, she has 1,399 career
points and has a shot at breaking the 2,000 point mark. She needs 601 points in 2008-09 to accomplish that feat.
Along with Carpenter on the first team,
Leada Berkey of Western Oregon, Beth Christensen of Seattle
Pacific and GNAC Players of the Year in Rebecca Kielpinski of
Alaska Anchorage and Jackie Hollands of Seattle Pacific rounded
out the team.
Marquis, a native of Cascade, Mont., had a
very impressive sophomore campaign earning her honorable mention
honors. She played
and started in all 27 games and averaged 9.3 points for
third-best on the team. She led the team with 114 assists and 87 steals, which
ranks her second in school history for steals in a season. Marquis was forth on the team in rebounding as well,
pulling down 4.9 rebounds per game and had 113 for the season. She scored double figures in 12 games this season and
tallied a career-high 20 points against Western Washington on
Jan. 31. Marquis
led the team with four double-doubles this season.
Hollands and Kielpinski were tabbed as
Players of the Year, while Kalhie Quinones of Alaska Anchorage
was named Newcomer of the Year and Amanda Dunbar of Western
Washington earned Freshman of the Year honors. Seattle Pacific’s Julie van Beek was named Coach of the
Year leading the Falcons to a perfect 27-0 record and their
fifth GNAC title in six years.
The Yellowjackets finished the season with
an 11-16 record and an 8-10 record in their first year in the
GNAC. MSUB returns
all five starters for next year.
