SEATTLE, Wash. – Seattle University cruised
to a 2-0 lead en route to a 3-1 conference win against Montana
State Billings in GNAC volleyball Saturday night. The Redhawks
won 30-19, 30-23, 22-30, 30-25.
The Yellowjackets dropped their third
conference match of the season and their second in the last
three matches to fall to 6-3 in the Great Northwest Athletic
Conference (13-5 overall). Seattle improved to 4-5 in the
conference and 7-10 overall. MSU Billings remains in third
place in the conference standings behind Western Oregon and
Western Washington.
The Redhawks broke from a 12-12 tie in the
first game, outscoring the Yellowjackets 18-7 over the final 25
points. In the second game, Seattle pulled away from a 7-7 tie
to lead by as much as 15-9 in the early going. MSUB battled
back to within 20-18 before a 10-4 Redhawk run ended the game.
“We really came out flat,” said
Yellowjacket head coach Sara Schaub. “Our communication was
low, and Seattle did a good job of taking advantage of that and
controlling the match. Our passing was not sharp, one of the
worst matches we’ve had this season. We had troubles starting
anything because of our passing.”
Down two games to none, the Yellowjackets
responded with a solid third game. They jumped to a 10-5 lead
and never looked back, leading by as many as 11. The Jackets
hit .382 in the third game to salvage a .110 hitting percentage
for the match. They didn’t hit above .048 in any of the other
three games. Seattle led wire to wire in the fourth and final
game.
The Yellowjackets had three players finish
in double figures for kills, led by Devon Crotteau’s (Casper, Wyo.) 16. Crotteau had a match
hitting percentage of .190 and also picked up a match-high 16
digs and four aces.
Jennifer Boe (Casper, Wyo.) knocked down a dozen kills to go with 13 digs,
and Alicia Cazemier (Vauxhall, Alberta) added 11 kills. Stefania Aladjova (Sofia, Bulgaria) handed out 36 assists
and dropped in three aces.
Seattle was led by Nikole Thompson’s 16
kills, 14 digs and five aces. Libby Graff added 10 kills and
was in on three blocks. Josie Christiansen had six blocks and
four aces.
The Yellowjackets hit the road again next
weekend when they travel to face league-leader Western Oregon
(8-1) on Thursday and winless Saint Martin’s on Saturday.
Western Oregon won twice in Alaska this weekend to hold onto the
top spot in the GNAC standings. The Wolves’ only conference
loss was at MSU Billings on Sept. 15.
The Yellowjackets’ next home matches will
be Oct. 18 and 20 when they host Alaska Anchorage and Alaska
Fairbanks. At the Oct. 20 match against Fairbanks, MSU Billings
will honor the 2006 Heartland Conference championship team, the
school’s first volleyball team to qualify for the NCAA
Tournament. The ceremony will take place during the
intermission between games two and three. Every member of the
2006 team is expected to be in attendance. |
