BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana State Billings
Yellowjackets split a non-conference doubleheader with Western
Washington Sunday afternoon at Cenex Stadium.
The Jackets won the opener 5-1and the Vikings won the
nightcap, 3-2.
The Yellowjackets (26-21) opened the game
with a run in the bottom of the first as leadoff hitter, Jessica
Frank, reached on a walk, stole a base and then scored on an
error for a 1-0 lead.
The Jackets had runners at second and third, but were not
able to get more runs in the inning.
Western Washington (23-19) evened the game in
the top of the second as Lisa Pendergrast led the inning off
with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and
scored on a sacrifice fly for a 1-1 score.
MSUB regained the lead in the second on two
Viking miscues for a 2-1 lead.
Stephanie Gosselin reached on an error by the shortstop
and scored on a stolen base and error by the catcher.
Leslie Davis added to the Jacket lead in the third with a
solo home run to left center, her seventh of the year.
Frank hit a RBI two out single in the fourth increasing
the Yellowjacket lead to 4-1, scoring Gosselin who began the
inning with a single and stole second.
Yellowjacket hurler Rebekah Tsatsa retired
the side in order in the fifth and retired her 10th
in a row, dating back to the last out of the second inning
preserving the 4-1 lead.
MSUB added another run in the sixth on a RBI single by
Mandy Schaapveld for a 5-1 lead heading into the seventh.
The Vikings had one last chance in the top of
the seventh and got a leadoff single by Liza Teichler breaking
up a streak of 13 consecutive Vikings retired by Tsatsa.
WWU did get two on in the seventh, but were unable to
bring anyone home.
Frank led the Jackets in the opener going 2
for 3 with a RBI and a run scored.
The Jackets tallied five runs on seven hits, while WWU
scored one run on five hits and had four costly errors.
Tsatsa scattered five hits, one earned run, one walk and
four strikeouts.
Lisa Moore took the Emily Hardin offering
deep for a solo home run in the bottom of the second of the
nightcap, for a 1-0 lead.
It was Moore’s second round-tripper of the year.
The Vikings took the lead in the third with
three singles helped out by a couple of passed balls and a wild
pitch for a 3-1 lead off Jacket starter Terina Stacks.
Head coach Tony Stone brought in Moore who closed out the
inning.
The Jackets put two on with nobody out in the
fifth, but grounded into a double play.
Moments later, Frank roped a RBI single to center on a
0-2 count with two outs for a 3-2 score.
With one last chance in the seventh,
Schaapveld and Frank got singles to put runners at the corner
with two out but were unable to get the tying run across.
Frank led the Jackets with three hits and a
RBI. Stacks (1-4)
took the loss for the Jackets, going 2-2/3 innings, allowing
three runs – one earned and two walks.
Moore pitched the rest of the game, allowing five hits,
one walk and six strikeouts.
The Yellowjackets conclude the regular season
May 3 at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader against Central Washington
at Cenex Stadium. |
