BILLINGS, Mont. – Coming into the Great
Northwest Athletic Conference like a whirlwind, the Montana
State Billings men’s soccer team posted its seventh-straight win
Sunday blanking Saint Martin’s University 2-0. The
Yellowjackets lead the GNAC with a 7-0-0, 3-0-0 record, while
the Saints dropped to 2-7-0, 0-2-0 with the loss.
Two early goals by Yellowjacket
scoring-leader Sam Charles (Weymouth, England) were enough to give the Jackets their
school-record sixth shutout of the season. Scoring just 6:52
into the contest, Charles connected on a long arcing pass from
teammate Scott Dixon (Dorset, England). Going one-on-one with the
Saints’ keeper, Charles shot from 10 yards to score his tenth
goal of the season.

Playing with confidence, Charles found the
net again at the 19:13 mark. Beating the Saint’s back line,
Charles took the ball around two defenders in scoring an
insurance goal for MSUB.
“We were mentally ready for this game and
didn’t allow many chances for Saint Martin’s to get past our
defense today,” said Yellowjacket head coach Dan McNally.”
The Yellowjackets out-shot the Saints 22-3
with a 7-2 shots-on-goal advantage. Zac Lubin made five saves
while Sander Tollefson (Missoula) tackled two.
Today’s win ties the school record of seven
wins that dates back to the 2001 season. Charles set the school
record for consecutive games with at least one goal scored in
Friday’s shocking win over Seattle University, and has now
scored in every game so far this season.
“We have a very difficult road trip ahead
of us with three games against tough GNAC teams,” added
McNally. “We will need to be focused and play our very best.”
The Yellowjackets travel to Washington this
week where they will play at No. 4 Seattle Pacific (4-0-3,
1-0-0) on Thursday, Western Washington (3-3-0, 0-1-0) on
Saturday, and at Seattle University (5-2-0, 0-1-0) on Monday,
September 24. The Jackets next home game is scheduled for
Saturday, September 29 against Colorado Christian at 1:00 p.m.
at the College of Technology. |
