DENVER, CO – In a
much-anticipated match up between nationally and regionally
ranked teams, Metropolitan State used three second half goals on
Friday to blowout Montana State-Billings, 5-0. The
Yellowjackets entered the game ranked first in the NCAA Midwest
Region and eighth in the nation. The Roadrunners were the
second-ranked team in the region and ninth in the country.
The game was evenly matched
for the first 30 minutes with each team managing four shots
during that span. The Roadrunners finally struck at 31:12 on a
penalty kick by Kylee Hanavan. Metro tacked on a second goal
just before halftime when Brooke Kiefer hit a streaking Justine
Montoya, who beat Yellowjacket keeper
Megan Plank (Phoenix, AZ) at 38:05.
The Roadrunners wasted little
time padding their lead in the second half, scoring just 1:47
into the period on a breakaway goal by Kira Sharp. Metro added
insurance goals in the 71st and 75th
minutes to cement the win. Hanavan finished with two goals and
two assists in the game.
The Roadrunners finished the
game with a 16-5 shots advantage, including 12-4 shots on goal.
Metro out-shot MSUB 10-1 in the second half. Plank made seven
saves, and Metro goalkeeper Rachel Zollner made four. The
victory extended Metro’s home unbeaten streak to 57 games.
“We didn’t play very well
today,” said Yellowjacket head coach Don Trentham. “The
coaching staff and players are all disappointed with the way we
played. It’s a shame to come into a game like this and not
perform the way you know you can. Metro is a great team. We’re
a good team as well. Good teams have bad games sometimes; we
had our bad game today, and I think Metro had a great game. We
can’t dwell on this because we have another big game on Sunday.”
The Yellowjackets will look to
rebound on Sunday when they play another important regional game
at Regis University (7-5-2). MSU Billings next plays at home on
October 13 when the Jackets host Heartland Conference foe St.
Mary’s. |
