Coach Trentham post game audio
MISSOULA, MT – The Montana
State-Billings women’s soccer team gave the Montana Grizzlies
all they could handle Friday evening, eventually falling 1-0 in
double overtime. The loss ended a 10-game winning streak to
start the season, dropping the Yellowjackets, ranked 18th
in NCAA Division II, to 10-1-0. The Division I Griz improved to
4-5-0, winning their home opener.
“We’re certainly disappointed
because every time we go out there we want to win,” said
Yellowjacket coach Don Trentham. “But as a coaching staff I
don’t think we could have asked anything more of our players in
terms of their effort. The effort was tremendous. We played
against a Division I opponent who was big, strong and fast, and
I think we did a good job matching up with them. For 101
minutes we were 0-0 with a Division I opponent, and you have to
give the players credit for that.”
The Yellowjackets rode the
stellar goalkeeping of senior
Megan Plank (Phoenix, AZ) to stay in the game despite being
out-shot 16-8. Plank made nine saves, including eight in
regulation, to preserve the scoreless tie. The Griz finally
broke through at 100:38 when Lindsay Winans headed in a crossing
pass from Kristyn Shapka. The goal was Winans’s fourth of the
year.
The Yellowjackets managed just
two shots on goal in the game, one each from
Ally
Stroup (Ojai, CA) and
Brittney Sandau (Billings, MT). Stroup fired off five shots
total. The Grizzlies’ MacKenzie Murphy and Rachael Mayer each
peppered Plank with three shots on goal. Montana goalkeeper
Grace Harris made two saves.
The Yellowjackets return home
to host Dallas Baptist on September 28. That game kicks off at
4:00 p.m. at the MSU Billings College of Technology. It will be
the final home game for the Jackets until the middle of October. |
