LAREDO, TX – If you ask
Montana State-Billings women’s head soccer coach Don Trentham
what could be better than a 7-0 start to the season he would
answer, “To get to the NCAA Tournament.” The Lady Jackets
appear to be on their way, picking up their seventh straight win
of the season – the best start in school history – against Texas
A&M – International Sunday in Laredo, Texas. The Jackets downed
the Dustdevils in shutout fashion winning 3-0. The loss drops
Texas A&M to 1-2-0 while improving the Jackets to 7-0-0.
“The team responded well today
after the double overtime win yesterday,” said head coach Don
Trentham.” “It was hot and extremely humid, so for us to play
well in these conditions and get the win was good for us.”
The Yellowjackets were
scoreless in the first half of play, but came out on fire
scoring three goals in a span of less than eight minutes against
the Dustdevils. At the 46:39 mark,
Ally
Stroup (Ojai, CA) made school history for career goals
scored (32) overtaking Abby Farmer’s record of 31 dating back to
2001. Stroup made a run and took a through ball from
Mandy Ploskonka (Federal Way, WA) to score what would become
the game-winning goal. Just three minutes later
Amy
Stephens (Colorado Springs, CO) scored her first goal of the
season when Stroup passed a cross-ball left in front of the net
allowing Stephens to volley the ball for the insurance goal. To
put an exclamation mark on the record-setting day, Stroup added
the Jackets third goal of the game at 54:11 taking the through
ball from Stephens.
“This was a good game to win,”
said Stroup. “It continues to build our confidence and we need
that going into our game against Incarnate Word on Tuesday.
They went to the NCAA Tournament last year and won conference
and that is where we want to be,” added Stroup.
The Jackets’ defense continues
to do their part, keeping the Dustdevils to just two shots on
goal. As a team, the defense has posted a school-record 409:00
consecutive shutout minutes, keeping their opponents to just one
goal on the season. Senior goalkeeper
Megan Plank (Phoenix, AZ) posted her 19th career
shutout and has a goals against average of just 0.14 on the
season.
“The defense has been very
solid,” said Trentham. “Getting two more wins on the road and
having them be shutouts is just great soccer.”
The Yellowjackets have Monday
off before wrapping up the three-game road trip against the 2005
Heartland Conference Champions University of the Incarnate Word
(3-1-1) September 12 in San Antonio. The Lady Jackets then
return home to host the Fourth Annual Futbol Frenzy sponsored by
RBC Dain Rauscher September 16. The Jackets will play Texas A&M
– International at 4:00 p.m. at College of Technology Field. |
