GOLDEN, CO – A record setting
goal was enough to give the Montana State-Billings women’s
soccer team a season-opening victory Thursday night. The
Yellowjackets used an
Ally
Stroup (Ojai, CA) goal in the 20th minute to
defeat Colorado School of Mines, 1-0. The game was the season
opener for both teams.
Stroup’s goal gave her 72
career points, surpassing Margot Merrill-Johnson for the school
record. Stroup now has 25 career goals, just six short of Abby
Farmer’s school-record 31. It was also Stroup’s ninth game
winning goal of her career, pulling her to within two of
Merrill-Johnson’s school record of 11.
“We played really well in the
first half,” said Yellowjacket coach Don Trentham. “We looked
solid on offense and were putting the pressure on. Our goal on
the road trip is to come back with a winning record. We’re off
to a good start. Colorado Mines was a good team; they were well
organized. Any time you can win a college soccer game on the
road is good, and we were able to pull one out.”
The Jackets’ top scoring
tandem from last season hooked up for the only goal of the game
at 20:08. Stroup took a pass from
Brittney Sandau (Billings, MT) before beating Orediggers
goalkeeper Marissa Burson.
The Yellowjacket defense then
did its part in a game that was mostly controlled by the
defenses. MSU Billings keeper
Megan Plank (Phoenix, AZ) had to make just four saves for
her 29th career victory. The Orediggers out shot the
Yellowjackets 8-7 in total shots and each team had four shots on
goal.
The Yellowjackets now travel
to Portales, NM, for a pair of weekend games. They face Fort
Lewis in a neutral site game on Saturday before playing at
Eastern New Mexico on Sunday. Both games start at 1:00 p.m. |
