Lady Jackets Complete First Round at Rattler Roundup (2/26/07)
Round 1 Results
SAN ANTONIO, TX- Following travel
delays and lost clubs, the Montana State-Billings
women’s golf team wrapped up the first 18-holes of
competition Monday at the Lady Rattler Roundup held at
the Pecan Valley Golf Course in San Antonio, Texas. The
invitational is the first spring competition for the
Lady Jackets, and the first time the team has shot a
round of golf outside since the fall.
Using rental clubs, the Lady
Jackets shot to a first round total 381 to sit in
seventeenth place in the 18-team field. The
Yellowjackets will look to improve over the final
18-holes set to be played Tuesday. Leading the team
competition is St. Edward’s University who carded a
combined 315. Six strokes back in second is
Northeastern State University with a 321. Rounding out
third place is the host team St. Mary’s University with
a round one combined 332. The Rattlers hold a slim
margin over fourth through seventh places with just
three strokes separating the seventh place team from
third place.
Shooting an even-par 72 through the
first 18-holes and holding a four-stroke lead over
second place is Emily Kvinta of St. Edward’s
University. Amanda Anderson from St. Mary’s is second
carding a four-over par 76. There is a four-way tie for
third place. Beth Ann Nussbaum, Marcie Hopson, Jamie
Shirley, and Katie Miller representing four different
schools shot a first round 77.
The Lady Jackets are paced by Halley Montalban’s (Billings, MT) first round 89.
Montalban is in a four-way tie for fifty-third. She
shot a 44 on the front nine, followed by a 45 on the
back nine. Emily
Maag (Colstrip, MT) carded a 91 tying her for
sixtieth.
“I am real proud of the ladies for
sticking in their and competing well today,” said
Yellowjacket head coach Jeff Nelson. “It is always hard
when you don’t have your own clubs, let alone not
getting a practice round or a good night’s sleep since
we got into San Antonio at about midnight on Sunday.”
Following tomorrow’s final round,
the Lady Jackets head to Pottsboro, Texas for the Pepsi
Lion Invitational March 19-20. The Jackets have three
spring invites in preparation for the Heartland
Conference Tournament that will be held April 15-17 in
Irving, Texas.
“We will shoot better tomorrow,”
added Nelson. “The course and the weather are
absolutely beautiful so we are looking forward to
Tuesday’s round.”
