BILLINGS, MT –
Fresh off a long three-game road
swing, the Montana State-Billings women's basketball team
returned home for a convincing 73-47 victory against Lincoln
University on Saturday. The win improves the Lady Jackets'
season record to 14-4 and 3-1 in Heartland Conference play.
With the loss, Lincoln’s struggles continue, dropping their
overall record to 2-14 and 0-3 in the conference.
It
didn’t take long for the hot shooting of the Lady Jackets to
build up a lead in the first half. As they have much of the
season, MSUB found early success from beyond the arc, going
11-of-23 in the first twenty minutes. Sophomore
Jetton Meadors (Billings, MT)
capped the giant first half lead with a buzzer-beating heave
from just beyond half court, putting the Jackets up 42-17.
Alira Carpenter (Lewistown, MT)
turned in another stellar night from the floor, shooting 7-of-12
and finishing with a team-high 19 points. Carpenter also netted
five 3-pointers in nine attempts. Senior
Michelle Lieber (Gillette, WY)
added 14 points on a perfect 4-of-4 from the floor. Lieber led
the team in rebounding with nine, made a
career-high 4 blocks, and recorded the
only Lady Jackets’ made free throws in the game (6-7). Jetton Meadors ended the contest with
nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and
also handed out three assists.
The
Blue Tigers were led by Cherika Ramsey, who scored 15 points on
6-of-11 shooting. The Jacket defense held the Heartland
Conference’s No. 2 scorer, Brezette Elder-Wade, to a mere
three
points. She entered the game just behind MSUB’s Alira
Carpenter with 16.8 ppg.
While out-rebounded by the Blue Tigers 39-28, the Jackets’ 50.9%
field goal percentage was too much for Lincoln to overcome.
Sophomore
Kayla McPherson (Glendive, MT) led
the Jackets off the bench with nine points and
four assists.
Jen Smith (Belgrade, MT) also came
off the bench, adding seven points on 3-of-5 shooting.
The
Lady Jackets will continue with the second game of a
four-game home
stand against St. Mary’s University on January 24 at 5:30 p.m.
