BILLINGS, MT – Second-ranked
North Dakota built a 21-point second half lead then held on for
a 71-62 win at Montana State-Billings on Saturday. The game was
the championship of the 2006 Chinook Wireless/Holiday Inn Grand
Montana Yellowjacket Classic.
North Dakota, which was
unbeaten during the regular season last year, improved to 5-0.
The Fighting Sioux defeated Metro State on Friday at
Alterowitz. The Yellowjackets dropped to 1-1 on the season
after beating Western Oregon on Friday.
The game was defensive from
the start with five lead changes and four ties in the first nine
and a half minutes. The largest lead either team held during
that span was four points. The Sioux regained the lead for the
third time in the half with 10:28 remaining, going up 15-14 on
an Ashley Langen jumper. That turned out to be the final lead
change of the night. North Dakota built a 30-25 lead at
halftime.
“I think that’s a direct
effect of both teams playing very hard,” said Yellowjacket head
coach Kevin Woodin of the low scoring first half. “It was low
scoring in the first eight or ten minutes of the game, and I
thought both teams were in the right positions defensively.”
The Yellowjackets cut the lead
down to one in the first two minutes of the second half. A
three-point play in the paint by
Michelle Lieber (Gillette, WY) pulled the Jackets to within
33-32. The Sioux responded with a 19-5 run over the next six
minutes. Danye Guinn started the run with one of her game-high
four 3-pointers. Carissa Jahner knocked down both of her
3-pointers during the same stretch, giving the Sioux a 15-point
edge.
A Guinn jumper with 9:02 to
play gave North Dakota its biggest lead of the night at 61-40.
The Jackets were able to whittle away at the lead over the next
six minutes behind a couple 3-pointers from Kayla McPherson
(Glendive, MT). Lieber and
Alira Carpenter (Lewistown, MT) each scored five points
during the same span. A Carpenter jumper with 3:18 left trimmed
the Sioux’s lead to single digits at 69-60.
Carpenter’s basket was the
Jackets’ last field goal of the game as neither team could score
for over three minutes. The drought that lasted from the 3:18
mark until there were just 12 seconds remaining ended when
Langen knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the win. MSUB
added a pair of free throws in the final second after North
Dakota head coach Gene Roebuck received his second technical
foul of the game.
Four Sioux scored in double
figures, led by 17 points apiece from Guinn and Kierah
Kimbrough. Guinn was 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from
3-point range. She also had five assists and two steals.
Kimbrough blocked four shots. Langen finished with 16 points
and seven rebounds, and Jahner added 10 points.
The Yellowjackets were led by
Carpenter’s 15 points and career-high seven rebounds. Lieber
scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting before fouling out.
Sophomore guard
Jetton Meadors (Billings, MT) recorded career highs with
eight points and five assists.
Jen Smith (Belgrade, MT) also scored a career-high eight
points.
“I think we can come away with
a lot of positives,” said Woodin. “We battled hard; we just
haven’t had to play that many minutes at that kind of
intensity. I think that can do nothing but help you as a team.
Our young players were really challenged. Midway through the
second half I thought their experience kind of wore us down. I
give my players credit for battling and getting back down to
single digits. All in all I was pleased.”
The Yellowjackets are now idle
until November 28 when they host Rocky Mountain College. That
starts a stretch of five games in 12 days, including games in
Missouri and Washington.
