Lady Jackets Wrap up Exhibition Season against Griz
(11/9/06)
BILLINGS, MT – The Montana
State-Billings women’s basketball team will play its final
exhibition game of the season on Sunday when the Jackets travel
to Missoula to take on University of Montana at 2:00 p.m. The
game will count as an exhibition game for the NCAA Division II
Yellowjackets, but it will be the regular season opener for the
Division I Grizzlies.
The Yellowjackets are 1-1 in
their previous two exhibition games. After leading by
double-digits in Bozeman last Thursday, the Jackets lost to
Montana State 75-69. Alira Carpenter (Lewistown, MT) scored 24
points in the loss, and Kayla McPherson (Glendive, MT) was
3-of-6 from 3-point range.
MSUB led wire to wire on
Tuesday in a 60-48 win at Rocky Mountain College. The Jackets
held the Bears scoreless for the first 7:31 of the game and led
by as many as 20 in the second half. Carpenter led all scorers
with 17 points. Michelle Lieber (Gillette, WY) had 15 points
and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Shantell Marquis (Cascade,
MT) had six points and six steals in a game-changing defensive
effort.
The Griz were 1-1 in their
exhibition games. They defeated Déjà Vu 70-57 before falling to
Northwest Sports, 71-69. Three Grizzlies – Dana Conway, Mandy
Morales and Shadra Robison – are former Billings West players of
Yellowjacket coach Kevin Woodin. The last time the
Yellowjackets played in Missoula in 2003 they scored just nine
first half points and were blitzed 80-43.
Following Sunday’s game in
Missoula, which can be heard on montanagrizzlies.com, the
Yellowjackets will open the regular season with the Chinook
Wireless/Holiday Inn Grand Montana Yellowjacket Classic on
November 17 and 18. Woodin has lined up powerhouse teams North
Dakota and Metro State along with Western Oregon for the
tourney. North Dakota and Metro will meet at 5:00 p.m. on
Friday followed by a 7:30 tip off between MSU Billings and
Western Oregon. Friday’s losers will play at 5:00 on Saturday
with the winners meeting at 7:30. |
