BILLINGS, MT – The Montana State-Billings softball team wrapped up the regular season with a doubleheader sweep of University of Great Falls on Sunday.  The Jackets prevailed in a marathon first game 20-12 and won the nightcap 8-0.

The pair of victories pushed the Jackets two games above the .500 mark at 24-22.  Great Falls dropped to 6-12.  MSU Billings plays at the Heartland Conference Tournament in San Antonio starting Thursday.  The Yellowjackets will be the No. 3 seed and will face sixth-seeded Oklahoma Panhandle State in the opening round.

Sunday’s first game spun out of control in the bottom of the third inning when nine different Yellowjackets scored.  All nine runs came before the Argos recorded an out in the inning.  By the time the Argos’ relief pitcher Nicole Johnson struck out the final two batters of the inning, the Yellowjackets led 15-1.

MSU Billings was in cruise control behind starter Terina Stacks (Washougal, WA) until the top of the fifth inning.  Stacks gave way to Aysha Maddox (Richland, WA) to start the fifth.  It was Maddox’s first collegiate appearance at pitcher.  The senior, who holds the school record for career games played, had played the other eight positions on the field for the Yellowjackets in her four seasons.  Maddox allowed eight runs in a third of an inning.  Stacks returned to the circle, but gave up another three runs as the Argos put 11 on the board in the fifth.

MSU Billings closed out the game with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth.  The game ended via the eight run rule when Jessica Frank (Great Falls, MT) doubled to score Stacks.  MSUB set single-game school records with 20 hits, 20 runs, and 18 RBIs.  Seven different players scored at least two runs.

Stacks set a new school single game record by scoring four times in the game.  She also tied the school record for hits in a game with four and doubles in a game with three.  The only other player in school history to hit three doubles in a game was current UGF assistant Joey Ehnes, who accomplished the feat against Saint Martin’s College in 2004.  Stacks also picked up the victory to improve to 6-4 on the year.

Frank, Steph Gosselin (Victoria, BC), and Jenna Haacke (Billings, MT) each had three hits in the game.  Frank doubled twice and drove in two RBIs.  Gosselin was 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBIs, and a home run.  Maddox was 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBI’s.

The Argos had five players with multi-hit games.  Kelsey Noble was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.  Jen Cox was 2-for-3 with two runs, four RBIs, and a home run.  Jo Bailey, Samantha Schultz, and Shannon Hatzell also had two hits apiece.  Meghan Meyer took the loss after giving up 11 runs in two innings.

The second game was close through the first four innings.  Jacket starter Lindsey Trenary (Helena, MT) and Argos starter Erica McAlmond kept the game scoreless through two stanzas.  The Yellowjackets broke onto the board in the third with a two-run home run from Stacks, her sixth of the year.  Maddox hit a solo shot in the fourth for a 3-0 MSUB lead.

The wheels fell off for the Argos in the fifth inning as the Jackets pounded out five of their 11 hits.  Gosselin hit a two-run homer, her second of the day and fourth of the season, to highlight the surge.  A Mandy Schaapveld (Puyallup, WA) RBI single scored Haacke from third to end the game.

Frank, Jenna McCartney (Hamilton, MT), and Leslie Davis (Federal Way, WA) were each 2-for-3 in the game.  Frank hit her third double of the day and twelfth of the season.  For the day, the Great Falls native was 5-for-8 with three RBIs and two runs.  Stacks was 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBIs.  She went 5-for-6 on the day to improve her conference-leading batting average to .405.

Trenary allowed just one hit and one walk in five innings to improve to 5-4.  She struck out four and didn’t allow a runner past first base.  Trenary sat the side down in order in three of the five innings.
