BILLINGS, MT – Mother Nature almost
swept the weekend, but the Montana State-Billings
softball team managed to sneak in one game on Sunday.
The Yellowjackets used big third and fourth innings to
blast Texas-Permian Basin 9-1 in five innings before a
burst of rain washed out the second game. MSU Billings
improved to 18-20 on the season, dropping UTPB to
11-18. Saturday’s doubleheader was cancelled because of
snow. Sunday’s second game was stopped with the leadoff
hitter at the plate in the bottom of the first.
The Falcons jumped to a 1-0 lead
courtesy of a Sasha Waggoner blast over the centerfield
fence off Yellowjacket starter
Lindsey Trenary (Helena, MT) in the top of the first
inning. Waggoner’s two-out home run was about all the
offense the Falcons managed against Trenary, who allowed
just three hits and one run in five innings. She struck
out a career-high seven without issuing a walk. The
freshman needed just 71 pitches to wrap up the victory.
The Yellowjackets tied the game in
the bottom of the second when
Leslie Davis (Federal Way, WA) drove in
Steph Gosselin (Victoria, BC)
with a sacrifice fly. Gosselin had led off the
inning with a double. MSUB broke the game open with
four runs in the third and three more in the fourth.
In the third,
Aysha Maddox (Richland, WA) hit a two-RBI double off
the left field fence to score
Terina Stacks (Washougal, WA) and
Jenna McCartney (Hamilton, MT). On the next at bat,
Jenna Haacke (Billings, MT) drove a two-RBI single
to left to plate Maddox and
Jessica Frank (Great Falls, MT).
The Jackets’ three-run fourth
inning was highlighted by Gosselin’s two-out, two-run
home run, her first of the year. Gosselin was 2-for-3
with a pair of runs and two RBIs in the game. Maddox
also went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Haacke
was 2-for-2, and
Lorel Palmer (Ogden, UT) was 2-for-4. McCartney
scored two times.
The Falcons’ Cristan Hagen (0-1)
took the loss, allowing nine hits and nine earned runs.
She struck out four and walked two. Waggoner and
Jessica Mireles were the only Falcons to advance past
first base in the game. Mireles singled in the fourth
and moved to second on a wild pitch.
The Yellowjackets host St. Mary’s
University (29-14) Thursday and Friday at Cenex Stadium
for a pair of Heartland Conference doubleheaders.
Thursday’s first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., and
Friday’s games start at 11:00 a.m. |
