AUSTIN, TX – The Montana
State-Billings softball team dropped two games to
league-leader St. Edward’s University Sunday in
Heartland Conference action. The Jackets dropped the
first game 2-1 and again 7-4 in the late game. The Lady
Jackets fall to 15-20 overall and 6-5 in the conference
while St. Edward’s improved to 31-14 and 11-1 to hold
onto the top spot in the league standings.
The Hilltoppers started the game
off with a two-run first inning. With two outs,
Jennifer Hollas doubled to left center field and
advanced to third base on a Yellowjacket passed ball.
Rebecca Ray hit a home run over the center field fence
for two RBI and the eventual game-winning hit.
The Yellowjackets responded in the
top of the second.
Aysha Maddox (Richland, WA) reached on a fielder’s
choice and advanced to second on the throw.
Jenna Haacke’s (Billings, MT) fly-out moved Maddox
to third and a
Leslie Davis (Federal Way, WA) single scored
Maddox. The Jackets were kept scoreless through the
rest of the game to fall 2-1.
Lisa
Moore (Bakersfield, CA) took the loss for the Lady
Jackets allowing two runs off three hits in one inning.
Lindsey Trenary (Helena, MT) came into the game in
the second inning and scattered just two Hilltopper hits
in five innings of work.
Lorel Palmer (Ogden, UT),
Jenna McCartney (Hamilton, MT) and Davis each had
one hit in the game.
Jennifer Bishop picked up her
second win in as many days allowing one run off three
hits in pitching the complete game. Bishop struck out
four and walked one. Hollas went 2-for-3 with one run
and Ray went 1-for-3 scoring one run and two RBI.
Palmer scored a run in the first
inning of the second game with the Lady Jackets knotting
the game 2-2 in the second as Davis hit her third home
run of the season. A three-run third inning that was
led off by a home run by St. Edward’s but the Toppers
back in the drivers seat.
Kept scoreless in the third and
fourth innings, the Lady Jackets picked up what would be
their final two runs of the game in the fifth.
McCartney led off the inning with a single followed by a
single by
Terina Stacks (Washougal, WA) to put runners on
first and second bases.
Steph Gosselin (Victoria, BC) drilled a double to
left center to score McCartney and advance Stacks to
third base.
Jessica Frank (Great Falls, MT) hit a single to
plate Stacks before the inning ended.
St. Edward’s added one more run in
the sixth inning to take the weekend sweep over the
Yellowjackets.
Frank went 2-for-3 with two RBI and
Davis went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI for the Lady
Jackets. Stacks took the loss allowing six runs off
five hits in four innings of work.
Courtney Francis earned the win for
the Hilltoppers allowing four runs off eight hits in
four innings. Hollas went 2-for-4 scoring two runs and
two RBI while teammate Mandy Phillips went 1-for-2
scoring four of the team’s runs.
The Lady Jackets are set to play a
doubleheader against University of Great Falls in Great
Falls on Wednesday, March 28. First pitch is scheduled
for 1:00 p.m. The Yellowjackets host University of
Texas-Permian Basin March 31 and April 1 at Cenex
Stadium with Saturday’s doubleheader starting at noon. |
