BILLINGS, MT – The Montana
State-Billings men’s soccer team posted a 4-0 shutout win over
visiting Colorado Christian University Saturday at the College
of Technology Field. The win, the second in a row for the
Jackets, improved the team to 3-6-2 overall while the Cougars
fell to 0-10-1.
Following a 1-1 draw against
the Cougars in late August, the Yellowjackets came out on the
offensive Saturday jumping out to the early 1-0 lead just 8:49
into the first half.
Josh Hernandez’s (Palmdale, CA) quick pass to
Jeremy DeHerrera (Kalispell, MT) just over the midfield
line allowed DeHerrera to fire a long ball toward the Cougars'
net. The ball took a lucky bounce over Cougar keeper AJ Kurtz
landing in the back of the net. The goal was DeHerrera’s first
of his collegiate career. At 21:35
Sam
Charles (Chiswell, England) took the ball to
the net beating two
defenders for the insurance goal.
“We played very well in the
first half and talked all week about how important getting that
first goal is, and today we did that,” said head coach Dan
McNally. “Early in the second half, the Cougars maintained some
possessions so we made the necessary changes late in the half
and it worked out for us.”
The opening 20 minutes of the
second half saw the Cougars pressure the Jackets, but it wasn’t
meant to be as
Matt
D’Hont (Rapid City, SD) took a long cross from Charles to go
to the net. A Cougar defender was coming in from the right side
and D’Hont took the shot curving the ball past the keeper.
Charles put an exclamation point on the day scoring on an assist
from
Greg McKeever (Kirkland, WA) with just eight seconds left on
the clock.
“Sam (Charles) placed the ball
well for me and I was able to put it in the corner,” said an
elated Matt D’Hont. “We have gained our confidence back and our
determination will help carry us into our upcoming games. With
the way the team is playing and the goals that are going in
along with our defense playing how they are, I think the game
against Mary will be the game that will give us the
back-to-back-to-back win,” added D’Hont.
The Yellowjackets out-shot the
Cougars 21-3 with 11 shots on goal. Keeper
Sander Tollefson (Missoula, MT) recorded two saves while
Kurtz posted five.
The Yellowjackets will host
University of Mary on Friday, October 6 with kickoff set for
3:30 p.m. Saturday will feature a neutral game between Mary and
Metro State at 1:00 p.m. followed by a 1:00 p.m. game on Sunday,
October 8 that will see the Jackets take on Metro State. |
