BILLINGS, MT – The Montana State-Billings men’s soccer team
opened the season at home with a loss Friday to No. 19
nationally ranked University of the Incarnate Word. The Jackets
fell 4-0 and are 0-2-2 on the season. The Cardinals improved to
2-0-0.
Heartland Conference opponent
Incarnate Word overtook the young Yellowjacket team in the
second half of play. The Jackets kept the nationally ranked
Cardinals to just one goal in the first
half, but unraveled in the
second conceding three goals.
At the 10:34 mark the
Cardinals’ Estaban Bayona took a high ball from teammate Kyle
Gillespy for a header into the Jackets’ net. In the second
half, Incarnate Word scored three goals in a matter of 22
minutes. Leading scorer Danny Juarez picked up his third goal
of the season following Tom Morrill’s attempt to score.
Goalkeeper
Sander Tollefson (Missoula, MT) knocked the ball down
allowing Juarez to tap it in off the rebound. On the next
goal, Juarez picked up an assist passing a short cross off the
right side to teammate John Ballantyne for the goal at 79:46.
With just 2:47 to play, Ballantyne placed a corner kick in front
of the net as Ian Ankney scored the final goal of the game.
“We played well in the first
half and the team did what I wanted them to,” said Yellowjacket
head coach Dan McNally. “Unfortunately our lack of experience
showed in the second half and it hurt us. We have a very young
team that is learning all the time.
Sam
Charles (Chiswell, England) and
Chris Cornish (Surrey, England) played very well. We now
just need to regroup for our game against St. Mary’s on Sunday.”
The Jackets managed just four
shots to the Cardinals' 22 with Tollefson making seven saves off
11 Cardinal shots on goal.
