BILLINGS, MT – The Montana
State-Billings baseball team dropped both ends of a
non-conference doubleheader Monday against Jamestown College at
Cobb Field. The Yellowjackets fell 5-3 in game one and an
eighth inning run by the Jimmies in game two gave Jamestown the
doubleheader sweep. The Yellowjackets fall to an even 19-19
with the losses, while Jamestown improved to 15-11.
Two runs in the second and
third innings by the Jimmies proved to be enough for the win in
game one as the Yellowjackets’ three runs fell short. The first
two Jimmies’ batters up in the top of the second were hit by the
pitch to place runners on first and second bases. Scott Arthurs’
sacrifice bunt advanced both runners and a Dave Sauter single to
left field plated both Matt Daul and Chad Hollister.
In the Jackets turn at bat,
Seth Moir
(Cody, WY) scored for MSUB after getting hit by a pitch and then
advancing on a Jimmies’ balk. A single by
Will
Crtalic (Billings, MT) advanced Moir to third and then scored on a
Jimmies’ error.
The Jackets scored a single
run in the third and sixth innings but the Jimmies’ defense held
the Yellowjackets scoreless in the bottom of the seventh after
scoring an insurance run of their own in the top of the inning
to take the opening game.
Matt
Schoonover (Great Falls, MT) led the Yellowjackets going
2-for-3 with an RBI.
Jon Clark
(Anaconda, MT) took the loss for MSUB allowing four runs, all
earned, off two hits in three innings of work. Clark walked two
and struck out two in the effort.
Sauter went 2-for-2 for the
Jimmies, scoring one run and two RBIs. Danny White picked up
the win for Jamestown allowing one run and just two hits in four
innings on the mound.
The Yellowjackets held the 2-0
lead over the Jimmies in game two until two runs in the top of
the fifth tied the game at two apiece. To open the game,
Nick Hoskyn
(Oelwein, IA) reached on a walk and then advanced to second on a
wild pitch. Moir singled to left field, advanced to second and
picked up an RBI as Hoskyn crossed home plate. Moir advanced to
third on the Jimmies’ second wild pitch of the inning and was
plated by
Jordan Shine’s (Great Falls, MT) single up the middle before
the inning ended.
Going into the eighth inning,
Jamestown was down two outs when Daul singled through the right
side and then advanced to second on a Yellowjacket balk. Byron
Wong came in to pinch run for Daul and was plated by Chad
Hollister’s single to center field setting up a Yellowjacket
comeback in the bottom of the eighth.
With one out,
Doug
Longfellow (Lewistown, MT) reached first base on a single
through the left side followed by a bunt by
Patch
Wirtzberger (Havre, MT). With Yellowjackets on first and
second, a Jimmies’ pitching change and a balk placed Longfellow
and Wirtzberger in scoring position, but back-to-back outs
stunted the would-be comeback.
Moir went 1-for-4 in the game
scoring one run and one RBI. Hoskyn scored for the
Yellowjackets going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Mike Cease
(Deer Lodge, MT) took the loss for the Jackets allowing one run
off two hits in two innings of work.
Steve Scott
(Billings, MT) started the game for the Jackets and struck out a
career-high seven batters in six innings.
The Jimmies’ White went
2-for-2 scoring one run, while Ben Cairns went 1-for-4 driving
in two RBIs. Matt Regan earned the win for Jamestown allowing
no runs and two hits in 1 2/3 innings of work. Nate Neumiller
picked up the save.
The Yellowjackets host
Heartland Conference opponent St. Mary’s (27-14, 19-9) April 20
and 21 for a four-game series. Friday’s game is slated for 4:00
p.m. with Saturday’s first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Cobb
