SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Montana
State-Billings baseball team split the twin bill against
University of the Incarnate Word Saturday in San Antonio,
Texas. After dropping the first game 6-4, the Yellowjackets
came back to notch the team’s first victory of the season winning
5-1 in the second game. The Yellowjackets are 1-3 overall and
1-3 in conference play. The two-time defending Heartland
Conference champions Incarnate Word are 7-2 overall and 3-1 in
league play.
Jeremy
Knowles (Three Forks, MT) took the loss for the Jackets in
game one allowing six runs off five hits in 3.1 innings
pitched. Knowles struck out two batters.
Seth Moir
(Cody, MT) went 1-for-1 with a run and hit a double.
Doug
Longellow (Lewistown, MT) also went 1-for-1 scoring two runs
for the Yellowjackets.
MSUB had the 2-0 lead going
into the fourth inning until the Cardinals’ scored six runs to
take over the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Jackets
scored a run in the fifth and seventh innings but wasn’t enough
following the Cards’ fourth inning scoring barrage.
The Cardinals’ Josh Baker went
1-for-1 scoring a run and driving in three batters. Blake
Mcanalley took the win allowing just one hit and three runs over
four innings, while seating four
Yellowjackets.
The Yellowjackets used a
steady offense and solid pitching to pick up the win in game
two. The Jackets’
Kyle Pryor
(Billings, MT) drilled a triple down the right line and was
brought in by
Willie
Crtalic’s (Billings, MT) fly out to center field.
In the fourth inning,
Mike Cease
(Deer Lodge, MT) was hit by a pitch to get on base.
Josh Wiley
(Belgrade, MT) stepped up to hit a triple driving in Cease for
the 2-1 lead. In the top of the seventh, Longfellow and Crtalic
advanced a base on a Cardinal balk to sit at second and third.
Nick Hoskyn (Oelwein, IA) singled up the middle for two RBI and the
insurance runs.
Wiley went 2-for-3 with two
RBI, while Hoskyn went 1-for-1 in the game batting in two
runners. Cease hit a double for the Yellowjackets and Pryor and
Wiley each drilled a triple.
Ben Lewerke
(Mason City, IA) took the win
scattering five hits over six innings. Lewerke allowed one run
and seated three batters. Cease picked up the save, pitching one
inning.
Jerry Anderson took the loss
for the Cardinals allowing three runs off four hits. He
struckout four. Chris Solis went 2-for-2 for the Cards, scoring
one run. Josh Hood was 1-for-2 driving in Incarnate Word’s lone
RBI in the game.
The Yellowjackets have six
games remaining in their lengthy road trip. They play a
doubleheader against Texas A&M – International Tuesday February
20 before playing four Heartland Conference games against St.
Mary’s University February 21 and 22. |
