SAN ANTONIO, TX – Two freshmen teamed up for
the game’s only goal Tuesday as the Montana State-Billings women’s
soccer team defeated Angelo State 1-0. The victory was the tenth
of the season for the Yellowjackets, who improved to 10-4-2.
Angelo State dropped to 6-11-1.
Tuesday’s game was the third in five days for
the Yellowjackets in Texas. They lost 1-0 at Incarnate Word last
Friday, tied St. Edward’s on Sunday, and defeated the Belles
today. The win over Angelo State also gave the Yellowjackets
back-to-back seasons of at least 10 wins for the first time in the
program’s history. They were 12-4-3 last season.
Freshman Mandy Ploskonka (Federal Way, WA) scored the game winner at
52:43 after taking a pass from fellow freshman Melissa Carlson (Renton, WA). Ploskonka fired from 30 yards
out, beating the Belles’ goalkeeper to the lower left corner of
the net. The goal was Ploskonka’s fourth of the season; Carlson
recorded her third assist of the year.
Goalkeeper Megan
Plank (Jr., Phoenix, AZ) made eight saves.
“We did a good job of getting the result
today,” said Yellowjacket coach Don Trentham. “Playing three
games in five days is tough. Our bench played a big part today.
It was one of those games where everyone contributed. We’ll leave
Texas 1-1-1 and get ready for Rocky on Saturday."
MSU Billings will wrap up the regular season
Saturday afternoon at Rocky Mountain College. Kickoff is
scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The Yellowjackets will then fly back to
Texas for the Heartland Conference Championship Tournament on
November 3-5. Their first round opponent will be determined by
the winner of the St. Mary’s/St. Edward’s game on Wednesday. |
