BILLINGS, MT - The Montana State-Billings
women’s soccer team chalked up their fourth shutout for the
season in as many games. The Lady Jackets defeated the
University of Great Falls 4-0 Sunday at the COT field extending
their home game winning streak to 13 and their home unbeaten
streak to 14. The win moves the Jackets to 5-1-1 on the season
and drops the Argos to 0-2-0 in their inaugural season.
“We played a good game today and held
possession well,” said head coach Don Trentham. “Anytime you
get three shutouts in one week you have to feel good. We have a
deep bench and it is important that everyone gets experience so
that when we call on them they feel comfortable. All our
players were solid and are doing want we want to do at this
point in the season,” Trentham added.
The Argos managed only one shot to the 25
put up by the Jackets offense. MSU Billings Jenny Mollendorf (Jr., F, Green River, WY) got the Jackets
off to a quick start scoring an unassisted goal at 9:16. Ally
Stroup (Jr., MF, Ojai, CA) scored her fifth and team leading
goal of the season on a right side pass from Chelsea Libby (Fr., MF, Puyallup, WA) at 40:59. Libby
earned her second assist of the game with a right side cross
that was deflected to the shoe of Freshman Micah Merrill-Johnson (Fr., MF, Salt Lake City) for an
insurance goal at 52:10 of the second half. Merrill-Johnson put
up her second collegiate goal just six minutes later off a
collision assist from Alyssa Wolfer (Jr., F, Longmont, CO). Great Falls keeper
Nicole Romano made 11 saves on the game. The Jackets Anita
Renemans made one save.
“The University of Great Falls coach has
done a great job putting the team together,” said Trentham.
“They are already playing like a third or fourth year team. As
for our game against Carroll College next Sunday, we will need
to play strong.”
Jackets goalkeeper Megan Plank (Jr., Phoenix, AZ) said, “It’s great when I can
count on our defense to make the plays needed to keep the other
teams offense from getting shots off. The entire team works
really well together. We had tough preseason practices and team
dinners together so we have formed a tight bond.”
The Lady Jackets head to Helena to take on
Carroll College Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m.
