BILLINGS, MT – The fastest goal to start
a game in school history also proved to be the game winner
Saturday as the Montana State-Billings men’s soccer team
defeated Colorado Christian, 1-0. Dustin Kono (Sr., Aberdeen, SD) found the net just 51
seconds into the contest for the game’s only goal.
“I’m very pleased with the performance
for two reasons,” said Yellowjacket coach Dan McNally.
“First, we kept our first clean sheet of the season, which is
very encouraging. Second, we created a lot of very good
opportunities to score. The team has remained positive and
motivated throughout a tough road schedule, and we are looking
forward to the three home games we have next week.”
Spectators had hardly settled in
following the national anthem when Marcus Riley (Sr., Kalispell, MT) picked up a loose ball
in the midfield and sent a nice pass through to a streaking
Kono. The pass set up Kono with a one-on-one against Colorado
Christian goalkeeper Andrew Kurtz. The goal was Kono’s
team-leading seventh of the season. Riley recorded his third
assist of the year, also best on the team.
Despite the lack of scoring for the next
89 minutes, each team had opportunities to put points on the
board. In all, the Yellowjackets out-shot the Cougars 18-5,
but only 5-3 on goal. Kurtz made four saves on the day while
Jacket keeper Jess Feldtman (Sr., Lander, WY) made three. Feldtman’s
third save preserved the win with just seven ticks on the
clock when the Cougars’ Levi Adams snuck behind the
Yellowjacket defense as time was running down.
The Yellowjackets’ first shutout of the
season improved their overall record to 3-9-0. Colorado
Christian fell to 1-9-0. MSU Billings hosts Dallas Baptist
next Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. They will wrap up the home
schedule with games against Regis University on Saturday and
Colorado State-Pueblo on Sunday.
Note: Kono’s goal was the fastest to
start a game by 39 seconds. The previous record was held by Jesse Spann (Sr., Rock Springs, WY), who scored in 1:30
last year at Humboldt State. Spann’s goal was also the game
winner in a 1-0 game.
