BILLINGS, MT – A lone second half goal
was the difference Wednesday as visiting University of the
Incarnate Word edged MSU Billings, 1-0, in a regional men’s
soccer game. The Cardinals, ranked sixth in the Midwest
Region, improved to 4-3-0. The Yellowjackets dropped to
2-6-0.
"I was very pleased
with our performance today," said Yellowjacket coach Dan
McNally. "Incarnate Word is a very good team, very well
coached. We competed with them for the whole 90 minutes.
We created some good chances early in the game, and we really
needed to score on one of those. As the game went on
they started to control the tempo. It was a positive
performance. We're going in the right direction, and
everyone is looking forward to playing our four home games in
a row in October."
Both defenses controlled play throughout
the game as each team managed just four shots on goal. The
Cardinals’ Fernando Jorge scored the game winner at 72:22,
sneaking his shot inside the left post after receiving a short
crossing pass from Owen Collie. The goal was Jorge’s
team-leading ninth of the season.
The Cardinals had a 21-7 overall shots
advantage in the game, although many of those shots sailed far
over the goal and had no chance of scoring. MSU Billings
goalkeeper Jess Feldtman (Sr., Lander, WY) and Incarnate Word’s Gil
Ben Nachum each had three saves on the day. The Cardinals
also had a team save when the Jackets’ Jesse Spann (Sr., Rock Springs, WY) drilled a header from
close range only to have it deflect off the shoulder of a
nearby defender at the last moment.
The Jackets’ Dustin Kono (Sr., Aberdeen, SD) had three shots, two of
which were saved by Nachum. Kono’s school-record five game
scoring streak came to and end Wednesday. Spann and Travis Poulson (Jr., Walla, Walla, WA) each had a shot on
goal.
The Yellowjackets are scheduled to play
three games in Texas starting Friday. They play Friday night
at Trinity College in San Antonio followed by a Sunday game at
St. Edward’s University in Austin. MSU Billings wraps up the
trip at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio on Tuesday. As
of Wednesday evening, Hurricane Rita had not altered the
schedule of any of the games.
