DUNCAN, OK – Montana State-Billings
golfer Nick Larson made a consistent showing at the 2006
NCAA South Central Regional, finishing in a tie for 25th with a three round total of 226. Playing in his second
Super Regional in as many years, the sophomore from
Riverton, Wyo., carded rounds of 75, 76, and 75 over the
three day tourney.
Playing consistent golf was
Larson’s downfall at last year’s Super Regional, where
he was up and down. This year Larson maintained a
steady approach to finish at 10-over par on the
7,077-yard par-72 Territory Golf Club.
“The score doesn’t quite show how
well I played,” said Larson. “I hit the ball great,
from my drives down to 30 yard shots. I kind of had a
cold putter for three days. I couldn’t get the putts
rolling. Other than that it was steady…lots of pars. I
was definitely a lot more relaxed than last year. I
felt more comfortable. A lot has changed in my game.
I’m able to picture what I want to do, set up, trust it
and hit the kind of shot I want to hit.”
In Wednesday’s final round, Larson
shot an even-par 36 on the front nine. He birdied Nos.
1 and 6 and bogeyed Nos. 3 and 9. It was the first
nine-hole side Larson played at even par in the
tournament. He maintained his roll through the first
four holes of the back nine, recording four-straight
pars. He bogeyed the next three holes before finishing
the round with two pars. For the 54-hole tourney,
Larson had 34 pars, four birdies, one eagle, 14 bogeys,
and one double bogey.
Travis Lovins of Cameron University
claimed the individual championship with a 5-under par
211. Four players in the field of 45 finished below
par. Cameron University also claimed the team title
with a 10-over par 874.
