SILVER CITY, NM – The Montana
State-Billings men’s basketball team put everything on the line
Friday in an attempt to win the Heartland Conference title.
After trading baskets with Western New Mexico, the Jackets were
eventually downed 96-85. The loss drops the Jackets to 19-6
overall and 9-3 in the Heartland Conference. The Mustangs,
still in the race for a playoff position, improved to 7-19 and
7-5 in the league. The Jackets loss gives St. Edward’s the
opportunity to clinch the No. 1 seed if they are able to hand
St. Mary’s a loss Saturday. If St. Edward’s is unable to
capitalize, then a coin flip would be required to determine the
first and second seed.
Moritz Wohlers (Sr., Wolfenbuttel, Germany) led all scorers
with 35 points and 16 rebounds earning a career-high in both
adding another double-double to his list. Wohlers shot 13-of-25
from the field and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Cameron Munoz (Sr., Chino, CA) racked up 20 points on
4-of-16 shooting from the perimeter. Munoz is just four
3-pointers shy of the all-time Division II record for 3-pointers
made. Carlin Hughes (So., Perth, Australia) had a double-double
coming from his 15 points and 10 assists. As a team the Jackets
shot 30-of-77 from the field, 10-of-38 from 3-point range and
15-of-17 from the line.
The Mustangs had four players
score in double figures and were led by Mike Sells and Jason
Jackson who netted 18 points apiece. Matt Enriquez and Trey
Clarkson added 16 points each. As a team the Mustangs shot
20-of-62 from the field, 8-of-25 from the perimeter and 34-of-39
from the charity stripe.
