Jackets Dominate Hilltoppers (1/28/06)

BILLINGS, MT – The MSU Billings men's basketball team accomplished an important task Saturday night. A win over St. Edward's. Never mind
the Yellowjackets scored 78 points in the first half. Or
that the 136 points the Jackets scored tied for the fourth-most
in school history. Or that Carlin Hughes's 45 points were
the tenth-most by a player in school history. The win, in
front of a raucous crowd of over 3,000, gave
MSU Billings a one-game advantage St. Edward's in the Heartland
Conference standings. The Jackets improved to 13-3 overall
and 6-0 in the conference, dropping the Hilltoppers to 15-4,
5-1.
The first half saw the
Yellowjackets jump out to the early lead. At the 16:34 mark the
Jackets had their first double-digit lead of the game. Back to
back three-pointers by Cameron Munoz (Sr., Chino, CA) at 16:02
and 15:32 increased the Jackets’ lead to 18. Continuing to
build momentum the Yellowjackets hit their stride at the midway
point of the half leading by 29. As the clock expired Hilltopper Jeff Obersteller made a field goal to send the teams
into the locker room 78-57, Yellowjackets leading.
MSU Billings shot 71 percent from the field in the half, in
large part do to transition lay-ups.
The Jackets stepped up to the
charity stripe 17 times in the second half and made 11 free
throws in a row during one stretch. Going into cruise control,
the Yellowjacket bench saw court time and was able to combine
for 14 of the team’s points. St. Edward’s Brandon Foskey hit
from behind the arc at the buzzer but it wasn’t enough in
tonight’s match-up, giving the Jackets' an important conference
win.
Six Yellowjackets scored in
double figures. The team was led by Hughes (So., Perth,
Australia) who scored a career-high 45 points on the night.
Hughes handed out 10
assists giving him a double-double. Mortiz Wohlers (Sr.,
Wolfenbuttel, Germany) netted 25 points and grabbed eight
boards. Lucas Walker (So., Launceston, Australia), Munoz and Buddy Windy Boy (Sr., Lodge Grass, MT) added twenty-one,
nineteen, and twelve points respectively.
As a team the Jackets went
39-of-66 from the field, and 46-of-64 from the line. The team
combined for 12 three-pointers and 46 rebounds.
The Hilltoppers' were led by
David Lunn with 20 points. Daniele Pierre and Taylor Land each
added 13 points. As a team the Hilltoppers shot 30-of-78 from
the field and 35-of-49 from behind the arc.
The Jackets' will remain at
home to host Heartland Conference opponent Lincoln University
February 3 and 4. Tip off is 8:00 p.m. |
