EMPORIA, KS – After posting
seven straight wins, the Yellowjackets' streak came to a halt
Sunday when they were downed 115-75 by non-conference opponent
Emporia State University. The Jackets drop to 12-3 on the
season and 5-0 in the Heartland Conference. The Hornets, ranked
eighth in the South Central Region, improve to 14-7.
The bench started the game for
the Yellowjackets and found themselves down by 13 in a matter of
two and a half minutes. Jay Jamieson (So., Big Sandy, MT) got the Jackets started in
scoring on a three-pointer at the 18 minute mark of the first
half. At the 16:04 point, the Jackets traded the underclassmen
for the regular starting lineup hoping to bring things back in
check. It didn’t seem to matter as things went from bad to
worse for the Jackets. The Hornets steadily built their lead
coming primarily from Yellowjacket fouls and 100 percent free
throw shooting. A much needed three-pointer by Buddy Windy Boy (Sr., Lodge Grass, MT) and back to back slam
dunks by Lucas Walker (So., Launceston, Australia) with just under 10
minutes in the half was still not enough to ignite the
Yellowjacket spark they needed to come back from the large
deficit. The Jackets were able to get
within 14 points of the Hornets with four minutes left to play
in the first half on a lay-up made by Walker. The Hornets’
Tyrell Sledge made a three-pointer with five seconds remaining
to give the Hornets the 57-32 lead at the half.
“I made a decision coming into
tonight’s game to let the bench play and get their first
collegiate start,” said Yellowjacket head coach Craig Carse.
“Any time you play as hard as we do and perform as well as we
do, it can be a little frustrating to struggle like we did
tonight.”
Three Yellowjacket 3-pointers from Moritz Wohlers (Sr., Wolfenbuttel, Germany) and Cameron Munoz (Sr., Chino, CA) to start the second half
brought them within 19. The Hornets answered each point of the
Jackets with two of their own to further extend their lead.
With just 1:41 remaining in the game the Jackets were down 47
points. The Yellowjackets put together seven points in the
final minute of the game to be handed their first loss since
December 30.
The Jackets had four players
score in double-digits and the bench combined for 58 of the
team’s total points. They were led in scoring by Munoz who put
up 19 points. Munoz went 5-of-10 from behind the arc. One more 3-pointer by Munoz will tie him for sixth on the NCAA Division II all-time record list. He currently has 388 career 3-pointers. Walker posted 14 points all coming in the first
half of play. Walker went 6-of-10 from the field and grabbed
three boards. Carlin Hughes (So., Perth, Australia) and Wohlers added 10 points
apiece. Wohlers had five rebounds on the night and a career
high two 3-pointers. Hughes dished out 12 assists for a
double-double.
The Hornets put on a shooting
clinic in front of their home crowd hitting 90 percent from the
free throw line, 40-of-81 from the field and 9-of-23 from 3-point
range. Sledge led the Hornets in scoring putting up a huge 36
point tally. Sledge hit 11-of-12 from the line and 5-of-8 from
behind the arc. Leroy Dawson and Shawn Herrman added 22 and 21
points respectively.
“The kids stayed together in
spirit tonight and now we will come home and prepare for our
game against St. Edward’s University,” added Carse.
The Yellowjackets return home
to host St. Edward’s University in an important conference game.
The winner of Saturday’s match-up will stand in first place in
the Heartland Conference standings. Tip off is set for 8
