BILLINGS, MT – The Montana State-Billings
men’s basketball team continued to cruise through its early season
non-conference schedule with a 111-79 win over Minot State on
Saturday afternoon. The Yellowjackets improved to 2-0 and are
averaging 115.5 points per game through their first two wins.
Minot State had its four-game winning streak snapped to fall to
4-4.
“The kids did wonderful,” head coach Craig
Carse said afterward. “I’m very, very proud of them. They had a
lot of poise, and they’re trying real hard. We’re a very young
team and you have to play to get better. We’re just learning and
trying to get better.”
The Yellowjackets got out to a quick 11-point
lead in the first four minutes of the game. A Moritz Wohlers (Sr., Wolfenbuttel, Germany) layup at 15:54
gave MSU Billings a 14-3 advantage. Senior captain Buddy Windy Boy (Lodge Grass, MT) made two of his nine
3-pointers during that span.
The Beavers were within single digits just
twice more the rest of the game. After a Drew Hysjulien layup at
14:41 drew Minot to within 16-8, the Yellowjackets went on an 11-3
run over the next three minutes to pull away for good.
MSU Billings went into the locker room with a 57-28 lead.
Windy Boy scored a career-high 33 points,
connecting on 9-of-13 from behind the arc. He moved up to fifth
all-time at MSU Billings for career 3-pointers with 228. Windy
Boy also grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals.
Four Yellowjackets scored in double figures
in the game, including three starters. Guard Carlin Hughes (So., Perth, Australia) posted a double-double
with 23 points and 15 assists. He missed his career-high for
assists by just one. Lucas Walker (So., Launceston, Australia) added 13 points, and
Wohlers finished with 16 off the bench. Wohlers also grabbed
seven rebounds.
The Beavers were led by Lance Allerdings and
Tagg Williams who scored 14 and 13 points respectively off the
bench. The Beavers’ starters combined for just 30 points. Jordan
Ballard finished with 11, and Courtney Haley added 10. The
Beavers committed 28 turnovers in the game, leading to 26
Yellowjacket points. The Jackets also out-scored Minot 34-20 in
the paint.
The Yellowjackets don’t play again until
December 8 when they host Rocky Mountain College. The Jackets and
Bears will meet twice in three days, playing at Alterowitz
Gymnasium on the 8th and at Rocky on the 10th.
MSU Billings will hold its annual alumni game on December 3 at
Alterowitz Gym. |
