Yellowjacket Men Top 3-Point Shooting Team Again (4/10/06)

BILLINGS, MT – The Montana State-Billings men’s basketball team was the top 3-point shooting team in NCAA Division II during the 2005-2006 season, averaging 12.9 made 3-pointers per game.  It was the seventh time since 1997 that the Yellowjackets have led the nation in 3-pointers made.  In the NCAA’s final statistical rankings of the year, the Jackets also finished second for scoring average at 92.9 points per game.  MSUB has been in the top two for scoring average eight times since 1997.

Bolstering the Yellowjackets’ high-powered offense this year were two of the nation’s top 3-point shooters.  Senior guard Cameron Munoz (Chino, CA) led the nation in 3-point shooting, averaging 5.3 made threes per game.  Munoz also broke the all-time NCAA II career 3-point record with 451 made 3-pointers in his MSU Billings career.  An All-Heartland First Team selection, Munoz led the conference and ranked thirteenth in the nation for scoring average at 21.8 ppg.  He finished as the second-leading scorer in Yellowjacket history.  Munoz also ranked sixteenth in the nation this season for 3-point percentage (43.5) and 57th for free throw percentage (83.2).

Senior guard Buddy Windy Boy (Lodge Grass, MT) finished the season ranked thirteenth nationally for 3-pointers made, averaging 3.2 per game.  An all-conference honorable mention selection, Windy Boy also ranked 57th nationally for 3-point percentage (38.2).

Yellowjacket point guard Carlin Hughes (So., Perth, Australia) led the nation in assists for much of the season and finished second for assists per game at 9.6.  The all-conference second team guard also ranked 56th in the country for steals (2.1), 65th for 3-pointers per game (2.6), and 74th for 3-point percentage (34.6).

Although the Yellowjacket offense relied heavily on the 3-pointer, senior big man Moritz Wohlers (Wolfenbuttel, Germany) played a large part in leading MSU Billings to a 20-8 overall record and a share of the Heartland Conference regular season crown.  Wohlers, a transfer who was playing his first and only season as a Yellowjacket, ranked in the top 65 nationally in three statistical categories:  24th for field goal percentage (58.4), 52nd for scoring average (19.4), and 64th for rebounding average (8.0).  Wohlers joined Munoz on the All-Heartland First Team.

Along with being ranked in the top two in the country for both 3-point shooting and scoring, the 2005-2006 Yellowjackets were among the top 60 in NCAA II for five other categories.  The Jackets ranked tenth for assists per game (18.3), 26th for free throw percentage (74.4), 37th for scoring margin (9.0), 37th for 3-point percentage (38.5), and 60th for field goal percentage (47.3).  Complete NCAA statistical listings can be found at www.ncaasports.com.
