Lady Jackets Open Season with Win (Aug. 27,
2004)
Box Score
ST. CLOUD, MN – A pair of early goals lifted
the MSU Billings women’s soccer team to a 2-1 season-opening win
over Bemidji State (0-1) on Friday afternoon. Both teams were
playing their first game of the season at the three team
tournament hosted by St. Cloud State. The win tied the school
record for consecutive road wins at three dating back to the final
two games of last season.
Ally
Taylor (So., MF, Ojai, CA) put the Yellowjackets ahead 1-0
just 1:35 into the game when she took the ball at midfield and
drove all the way to the goal for an unassisted goal. Taylor was
an All-West Region second team selection last season. Her goal
Friday was the third fastest goal to start a game in school
history.
“It’s always good to come out and win the
first game of the year,” said Yellowjacket head coach Don
Trentham. “We still have to work on some things and improve, but
we’re happy with the way we played.”
MSU Billings took control less than 15
minutes later when Kelsey Vinnedge (So., MF, Great Falls, MT) scored her first
collegiate goal at 16:10 to give the Jackets a 2-0 advantage.
Vinnedge found the net from 18 yards out on a free kick. The
Yellowjacket defense dominated from the outset, allowing just five
shots in the game. Goalkeeper Megan
Plank (So., GK, Phoenix, AZ) made one save and allowed one
goal. Bemidji scored its goal in the 89th minute.
“Everyone was able to get into the game,
which is a positive thing,” added Trentham. “We controlled the
game from the start and were able to rest some of our starters for
Sunday’s game with St. Cloud. The goal we gave up was in the
final minute when we had a breakdown in the back. We were never
in jeopardy of losing.”
The Yellowjackets will have Saturday off
before playing host St. Cloud State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. St.
Cloud and Bemidji will face each other Saturday afternoon.
MSU Billings plays its home opener next weekend when the
Yellowjackets host the Third Annual MSU Billings Cup Sponsored by
Thrifty Car Rental. The Jackets face North Dakota on
September 4 and Mesa State on September 6. |
