Lady Yellowjackets Ninth in First Regional Poll (Jan. 19, 2005)
BILLINGS, MT – The Montana State-Billings
women’s basketball team is ranked ninth in the first NCAA West
Region poll of the season released Wednesday. The Yellowjackets
were 11-3 at the time of the poll and 12-3 after Tuesday’s win
over Western New Mexico. As expected, Seattle Pacific holds the
top spot with a 14-1 record.
MSU Billings defeated Western New Mexico,
100-63, on Tuesday and will host the Mustangs again at 7:00 p.m.
on Wednesday. It was just the eleventh time in school history
that the Lady Jackets had reached the 100 point mark.
Including Seattle Pacific, there are three
teams from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference ranked in the
top ten. Western Washington, who the Yellowjackets defeated to
open the season, is ranked third. The Vikings’ only loss of the
season has been to MSU Billings. St. Martin’s, who won in
Billings in December, is ranked seventh.
The California Collegiate Athletic
Association has six teams ranked in the poll, led by Cal
State-Chico at No. 2. Chico defeated the Yellowjackets in a
tournament at Humboldt State in December.
The regional poll conducted by the NCAA
Division II Women’s Basketball Committee will be released each
Wednesday through March 2. The final regional poll of the year
will determine the qualifiers for the NCAA West Region
Tournament. The top eight teams in the final poll advance to the
tournament, one of eight regional tournaments held across the
country.
