BILLINGS, MT - The Montana State
University-Billings Yellowjackets handed Humboldt their second
straight loss in as many days. The Lady Jackets started the game
with the lead and never gave it up to win 77-45 over Humboldt.
The win improved the Yellowjackets to 7-2 on the season and drops
the Lumberjacks to 3-7.
The Lady Jackets came out strong and kept the
Jacks scoreless for the first five minutes of the first half with
an early 6-0 lead. Kelly Fay of Humboldt got the Jacks started
with a lay up at 14:46. The Lumberjacks pulled within one point
at the 12 minute mark but a flurry of Yellowjacket field goals put
the Jacks at a 34-22 deficit at the end of the first half.
The teams combined for 43 turnovers and 10
steals apiece. The Lumberjacks came within five points of the
Jackets at the 11:51 mark with a made field goal by Laura Berreth.
The Yellowjackets then had a bench effort of 32 unanswered points
and five three-pointers in the following ten minutes of play to
put the game out of reach for the Lumberjacks.
Shannon Harvey led the Yellowjackets with a career high 21
points and tied the school record with 7 made three-pointers in a
single game. Teammate Tanya Petersen had 14 points and 6 rebounds. Senior Robyn Milne led the Jackets with 10 rebounds. Kayla Frize also had a double-digit night with 13 points.
Lumberjacks Kelly Fay and Nicole Lynch tied for the team high with
10 points apiece.
“I was very pleased with our defensive effort
this weekend,” said Yellowjacket head coach Kevin Woodin. “We
really stressed it this week and I felt all of our players made a
conscious effort to guard better. We played a solid first half on
both ends and I liked our offensive balance. In the second half,
you have to give Humboldt credit. They battle back to make it
45-40, but our players responded well. I was happy for Shannon to
have such a great night. She works hard and is a pleasure to
coach. Our bench played a crucial role tonight and everyone made
a positive contribution to this victory. We are looking forward
to our games against Saint Leo this week.”
The Lady Jackets are back in action December
20th and 21st when they host the Saint Leo
Lions at 6 P.M. at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
