BILLINGS, MT – The three post players for
Montana State-Billings combined for 56 points Friday night as the
Lady Yellowjackets pulled away for a 79-55 win over Ohio Valley
College. Senior Robyn Milne (Richey, MT) scored a career-high 31 points to
lead all scorers as the Yellowjackets improved to 2-0 on the
season. Ohio Valley fell to 0-3.
“I was pleased with our offensive execution
in the half court,” assessed head coach Kevin Woodin. “I thought
we were unselfish throughout the game and did a good job of
getting the ball inside. I do think we can improve on our early
offense and press offense. I think we need to capitalize on
2-on-1 or 3-on-2 situations better. Defensively, I think we can
definitely play better. Ohio Valley was very quick and explosive
off of the dribble. We need to defend better in our team
defensive scheme. We did do a decent job on the board and I
thought Robyn and Michelle rebounded well on both ends for us.
OVC didn’t back down at all and we will have to play better
tomorrow in order to get another win.”
The Yellowjackets jumped to an early 18-8
lead on the Fighting Scots in the first five and a half minutes of
the game. MSUB’s inside game bolstered the fast start with Milne, Tanya Petersen (Jr., Billings, MT) and Michelle Lieber (So., Gillette, WY) combining for 13 of the
team’s first 18 points.
Ohio Valley owned the second five minutes of
the game, cutting the Jackets’ lead to one at 18-17 with 10:24
left in the first half. Four different players scored for the
Fighting Scots in the 9-0 run.
MSU Billings used a 13-4 run over the next
five minutes to build another double-digit lead. Shannon Harvey’s (So., Billings, MT) 3-pointer at 5:28 put the
Jackets ahead 31-21. Ohio Valley scored the next seven points
before MSU Billings closed the half with a 9-2 run to lead 40-30
going into the locker room.
Ohio Valley was able to hang around for about
the first 10 minutes of the second half before the Jackets’ inside
game became too much to handle. The Fighting Scots’ Candice Gist
scored on a layup at 10:13 to cut MSUB’s lead to 55-46. The
Yellowjackets dominated the game from that point, closing the game
with a 24-9 run.
Milne was 11-of-15 from the field. She also
knocked down 9-of-11 from the free throw line as she was able to
establish inside position all night. Milne grabbed 11 rebounds
for her second double-double in as many games and also blocked
five shots.
“Robyn is very focused on both ends of the
floor and her game has become more versatile,” added Woodin about
his senior center. “She can score in a variety of ways. She has
established herself as a go to person.”
Petersen finished with 14 points and seven
rebounds. She was 7-of-14 from the field and added four assists.
Lieber totaled 11 points and 11 rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
She was an efficient 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from the
line. Lieber dropped in a couple midrange jumpers in the first
half to force the OVC defense to extend, leaving room for Milne.
The Fighting Scots did a solid job stifling
the Yellowjacket 3-point shooters. MSU Billings was just 2-of-13
in the game from behind the arc. With defenders keying on her all
night, long range threat Jenny Langford (Jr., Reedpoint, MT) handed out a game-high
seven assists to go with five points. Backcourt mates Harvey and Lisa Jellum (Jr., Gillette, WY) finished with eight and six
points respectively.
Ohio Valley was led by 20 points from Caley
Stevens. The sharp shooting wing was 8-of-12 from the field and
2-of-5 from 3-point range. Stacy Mielecki added 13 points and
Gist finished with nine.
The Yellowjackets and Fighting Scots will
square off again on Saturday night at Alterowitz Gym. Tip off is
set for 6:00 p.m.
