LAIE, HI – The Montana State-Billings
softball team needed every bit of its offensive might to
earn a PacWest Conference split at BYU-Hawaii on Tuesday.
The Seasiders scored five runs in the bottom of the
seventh to steal a win in the first game, 7-6. The
Jackets won in a slugfest in game two, holding on for a
16-11 victory. MSUB moved to 16-8 overall and 3-3 in the
PacWest. BYU-Hawaii is 13-19, 5-11.
The Yellowjackets scored two runs in
the third, fourth and fifth innings of the first game to
take a 6-2 lead into the seventh inning. The Seasiders
erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh, three
of them coming with two outs. Starter Joey
Ehnes (Sr., Great Falls, MT) walked four batters in
the inning after striking out five and walking just two in
the previous six innings. The Seasiders’ Sherri Howell
hit a three RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the
seventh to plate the winning run.
Ehnes and Christy Wankel (Jr., Great Falls, MT) each hit two-run
home runs to lead the Jackets’ offense. Ehnes was 1-for-3
and Wankel was 2-for-4. Cami
Rainey (Sr., Terreton, ID) went 2-for-3 with an RBI,
and Rachel Quarnburg (So., Billings,
MT) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Ehnes fell
to 12-6 on the season. She gave up just five hits in the
game, but her six walks hurt her cause.
Game two was a wild shootout with
each team posting big innings. The Seasiders tagged
Yellowjacket starter Megan McCrae (Sr., Brandon,
Manitoba) for four runs in the bottom of the third
to take a 4-0 lead. The Jackets responded with six runs
in the fourth, one in the fifth, seven in the sixth and
two in the seventh. BYU-Hawaii made things interesting
with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and a Brooke
Hilton grand slam in the bottom of the seventh, but
MSU Billings was able to hang on for its third conference
win. Before the 3-3 trip to the islands this week, the
Jackets were 1-33 all-time in Hawaii.
The Yellowjackets hit three home runs
with Ehnes, Layne
Pavey (Sr., Spokane, WA) and Jenna Haacke (Fr., Billings, MT) going deep.
MSU Billings had 17 hits in the game. Pavey was 2-for-5
and drove in a career-high four runs. Rainey went
3-for-6, scoring a career-high three runs and driving in
one.
Sara
Hanley (Sr., Kalispell, MT) went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and an RBI. Quarnburg
was 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run. Theresa Campbell (Sr., Great Falls, MT) was 2-for-4
with two runs and two RBI. Haacke went 2-for-3 with two
RBI. Ehnes was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
McCrae earned the win to improve to
3-2 on the season. She pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking
out three and allowing nine earned runs. Ehnes pitched to the final batter,
striking her out to end the game. The
Seasiders were led by Hilton’s four RBI. She was also the
pitcher of record for BYUH in both games. Chynna Wilcox
was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs.
MSU Billings leaves a rainy Hawaii
for a rainy California to play in the Easton Tournament of
Champions in Modesto on April 1-3. The Jackets will play
two games Friday and two Saturday in round robin play.
Sunday’s games are bracket play based on the round robin
results. Following the weekend in Modesto, the
Yellowjackets will play at home for the remainder of the
season. They kick off the long home stand with conference
doubleheaders against Chaminade on April 5 and 6 at Cenex
Stadium. |
