SEATTLE, WA – Montana State-Billings
split a West Region doubleheader at Seattle University on
Tuesday, winning the first game 2-1 before falling 6-2 in
game two. The game one win was the seventh-straight for
the Yellowjackets, who moved to 10-5 overall after the
split. They conclude their Spring Break swing through
Washington with a doubleheader at St. Martin’s in Lacey on
Wednesday.
Following a 4-3 win against the
Redhawks to close the Central Washington Invitational on
Sunday, MSU Billings took another one run decision in
Tuesday’s first game. Joey
Ehnes (Sr., Great Falls, MT) went the distance for the
win to improve to 7-3 on the season. She struck out seven
and lowered her earned run average to 1.52.
Seattle jumped to a 1-0 lead in the
second inning when Jane Purdy hit a solo home run off
Ehnes. That was all the Redhawks managed as Ehnes limited
them to three hits. The Jackets struck in the top of the
sixth inning when Ehnes drew a bases loaded walk to score Layne
Pavey (Sr., Spokane, WA).
MSU Billings manufactured the game
winning run in the seventh. Jenna Haacke (Fr., Billings, MT) reached on a
fielder’s choice and was replaced by pinch runner Jordan Waverek (Sr., Kalispell, MT). Waverek advanced
to second on a ground out by Christy Wankel (Jr., Great Falls, MT) and to third on
a passed ball. Pavey grounded to a deep shortstop to
plate Waverek for the game winner. Rachel Quarnburg (So., Billings, MT) was 2-for-3 at
the plate.
The Redhawks finally got the bats
going in game two, tagging starter Megan McCrae (Sr., Brandon, Manitoba) for six runs.
McCrae fell to 2-2 after giving up nine hits in six
innings. The Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first when Quarnburg singled up the middle to score Cami
Rainey (Sr., Terreton, ID). Seattle answered in the
bottom of the first with another solo homer from Purdy.
Seattle blew the game open with four
runs in the bottom of the second. Katie Ledbetter led off
the inning with a double and the Yellowjackets followed
with two errors. Three of the four runs Seattle scored in
the inning were unearned. MSUB added a run in the sixth
when Quarnburg drove in Rainey with another single up the
middle. Quarnburg was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
