BILLINGS, MT – A fast start carried Grand
Canyon to a 2-1 men’s soccer win over Montana State-Billings
on Sunday. The Yellowjackets dropped their second-straight at
home to fall to 5-10-0. Grand Canyon won for the second time
this weekend and just the second time this season to improve
to 2-12-1. The Antelopes defeated Si Tanka on Saturday after
the Screaming Eagles downed MSU Billings on Friday in the
round robin tournament.
Grand Canyon peppered Yellowjacket

Bales (Sr., Cody, WY) early and often, finally breaking
through at 38:48 for the first goal of the game. The Lopes’
Cassio Saverino emerged from a crowd in front of the goal with
the ball and scored from close range. Grand Canyon out-shot
the Yellowjackets 18-5 in the opening half and 31-15 in the
game. Bales finished the day with 13 saves.
Grand Canyon’s Ugljesa Vrbica scored his
third goal of the weekend at 56:38 to give the Lopes a 2-0
lead. Vrbica beat Bales one-on-one for the eventual game
winning goal.
The Yellowjackets’ Marcus Riley (Jr., Kalispell, MT) scored his third goal of
the season at 73:04 to keep MSU Billings within reach. The
Yellowjackets were unable to convert on a couple scoring
opportunities late in the game, and Lopes goalkeeper Byron
Bent made four of his six saves in the second half.
MSU Billings will conclude its home
schedule next Thursday when the Yellowjackets host University
of Mary at 2:00 p.m. The Jackets downed the Marauders 2-1 in
Bismarck in September. MSU Billings finishes the season on
the road with games at Colorado Springs and Metro State on
October 17 and 18 respectively. |
