SALT LAKE CITY, UT – The Montana
State-Billings men’s soccer team dropped a one goal decision at
Westminster College on Friday, giving up a lead to lose 3-2. The
Yellowjackets dropped to 2-2 overall while Westminster improved to
3-1.
The Griffins scored first when Trevor Hall
found the net in the 19th minute. MSU Billings tied
the game on Josh
Hernandez’s (Fr., D, Palmdale, CA) first collegiate goal in
the 38th minute. Hernandez’s free kick from 35 yards
out deflected into the goal off a defender.
The Yellowjackets took a 2-1 lead early in
the second half when Brian Palmer (Sr., F, Laramie, WY) took a
pass from Robbie
Thimm (Sr., MF, Park City, UT) and fired from 18 yards out for
his first goal of the season. That was the end of the Jackets’
scoring, however. In the game, the Yellowjackets had two goals
waved off because of offside calls.
Westminster rallied for a pair of goals from
Travis Nicolaiedes in the final 15 minutes to steal the victory.
In the 75th minute, Nicolaides scored on a free kick
from near midfield when Yellowjacket goalkeeper Jess
Feldtman (Jr., GK, Lander, WY) dropped the ball. Five minutes
later Nicolaides scored from 15 yards out on a breakaway for the
game winner. Feldtman made six saves, but his season record
dropped to 2-2.
MSU Billings wraps up the tournament on
Saturday against Newman University at 12:30 p.m. The
Yellowjackets return home to host Colorado-Colorado Springs on
Monday at 11:00 a.m. |
