CHICO, CA – The Montana State-Billings men’s
soccer team lost its first game of the season Monday night,
falling to second-ranked Cal State-Chico, 2-0. The Yellowjackets
dropped to 1-1 for the season after defeating Humboldt State on
Saturday. Chico, last year’s national runner up, improved to 2-0.
The Wildcats broke a scoreless tie with just
10 minutes remaining in the first half when Mike Elenz-Martin
scored to give Chico a 1-0 lead that it took into halftime. The
Yellowjackets were out shot 5-2 in the opening half.
“We had our chances in the first half,” said
Yellowjacket head coach Doug Seigle. “We played a little nervous
at first, but finished the half strong. We weren’t scared to be
playing the No. 2 team in the nation. I’m happy with the way we
played. We have some things to iron out, but we look forward to
regrouping and playing in Salt Lake next weekend.”
Chico out shot the Yellowjackets just 6-5 in
the second half and 11-7 in the game. Lucas
Sanchez (Sr., MF, Park City, UT) nearly tied the game in the
75th minute when his shot caromed off the post and into
the goalkeeper’s hands.
The Wildcats put the game out of reach in the
85th minute when Chris Wondolowski scored on a penalty
kick that was awarded after he collided with Yellowjacket
goalkeeper Jess
Feldtman (So., GK, Lander, WY) in the box. Feldtman made
three saves in the game.
The Yellowjackets return home briefly before
flying to the Westminster College Tournament in Salt Lake City
September 2-4. MSU Billings faces Vanguard on Thursday,
Westminster on Friday and Newman on Saturday. The Yellowjackets
were 2-1 at the same tournament last year. The Jackets will host
Colorado-Colorado Springs when they return on September 6. |
