Fast Start Leads to Yellowjacket Win over Chadron (Dec. 4, 2004)
Box Score
BILLINGS, MT – Ten first half 3-pointers
sparked the MSU Billings men’s basketball team to a 101-90
non-conference win over visiting Chadron State on Saturday
afternoon. Junior Cameron Munoz scored a season-high 34 points with nine
3-pointers to lead all scorers. The Yellowjackets improved to 4-0
overall, handing the Eagles their first loss of the year to drop
to 4-1.
“I thought our defensive intensity in the
first 10 minutes really set a tone,” said Yellowjacket head coach
Craig Carse. “I thought Jonathan Wiley (So., Westlake Village, CA) played a great
defensive game. It gave us a lead and allowed us to play some
people off the bench when we had some foul trouble.”
The Yellowjackets raced to a 31-13 lead in
the first ten and a half minutes. Munoz (Chino, CA) and Buddy Windy Boy (Jr., Lodge Grass, MT) each knocked down two
3-pointers during the opening 10 minutes. Kerington Youmans’ (So., Atlanta, GA) deep 3-pointer at 9:51 gave the Jackets their 18 point lead
with 15 of their first 31 points coming from long range.
MSU Billings led by as many as 23 in the
first half before settling for a 52-37 halftime advantage.
Chadron closed the half with a 15-7 run.
The Yellowjackets extended their lead to 21
in the first three minutes of the second half. Back-to-back
3-pointers by Munoz and Windy Boy put the Jackets ahead 62-41 with
17:06 to play. Chadron switched to a 2-3 zone at that point and
succeeded in slowing the MSU Billings offense.
“They’re zone made us flat,” said Carse. “In
the past when teams would do that, we had three shooters to attack
the zone. In the first half we were moving off screens and
getting good shots. In the second half our shooters had defenders
moving out at them.”
The defensive switch helped the Eagles
whittle the lead down to 10 by the 11:30 mark when Dave Camadini’s
3-pointer cut the Jackets’ lead to 73-63. The Eagles made two
more charges, with the next coming just under 10 minutes when they
were able to get to within nine.
Elijah Collins scored on a layup at 7:41 to
pull Chadron to within 81-72. Another Camadini 3-pointer made the
score 98-89 with 1:14 remaining. The Yellowjackets were able to
hold of each of the Eagles’ three second half runs and build a
double-digit lead each time.
Munoz was 9-of-16 from behind the arc for his
218th career 3-pointer. Windy Boy was an efficient
5-of-7 from long range for 17 points. Senior Justin Hassell (Brooklyn, NY) scored 21 points on 7-of-13
shooting from the field.
The Jackets’ Lucas Walker (Fr., Launceston, Australia) finished with a
double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds. Wiley added eight
points and a team-high six assists. Youmans handed out five
assists with his three points.
The Eagles had five players in double
figures, led by Camadini’s 25. He was 5-of-11 from 3-point
range. Darnell Williams scored 20 points, including 6-of-8 from
the line. Henry Davis added 11 points, Eric Griffo had 10 to go
with 13 boards, and Collins finished with 10.
The Yellowjackets next play on December 8
when they travel to Northwest Nazarene for their first road game
of the season. MSU Billings returns to Alterowitz on December 17
to host the Crusaders.
