Yellowjackets Cruise in Lopsided Win over Ohio Valley (Nov. 27, 2004)
Box Score
BILLINGS, MT – Following a slow start, the
Montana State-Billings men’s basketball team rolled to an easy
104-67 win over Ohio Valley on Saturday night. It was the
Yellowjackets’ second straight win over the Fighting Scots. MSUB
improved to 3-0, dropping OVC to 0-6.
Ohio Valley captured the early momentum,
taking a 10-4 lead on a Leon Daniel basket at 15:22. Three free
throws by Cameron Munoz (Jr., Chino, CA) and a 3-pointer from Buddy Windy Boy (Jr., Lodge Grass, MT) erased the Scots’ lead
by the 13:46 mark of the half and MSU Billings never trailed
again.
The Yellowjackets opened leads as large as 20
in the final two minutes of the first half, before heading to the
locker room with a 19-point advantage. MSU Billings closed the
opening half with a 13-7 run to lead 46-27 at intermission.
The Jackets wasted little time extending
their lead in the second half. Lucas Walker’s (Fr., Launceston, Australia) layup at 12:30
gave MSU Billings a 60-34 margin. The Yellowjackets built their
lead to as much as 38 late in the second half as the bench
contributed most of the minutes and points in the final 10
minutes.
Four of the five Yellowjacket starters scored
in double figures led by 20 points from Walker. The freshman
forward was 8-of-13 from the field and finished with a
double-double, adding 12 rebounds. Munoz and Justin Hassell (Sr., Brooklyn, NY) scored 15 points apiece,
and Windy Boy finished with 13. Starting guard Jonathan Wiley (So., Westlake Village, CA) scored two points
and handed out a game-high five assists.
The Yellowjacket bench, which had scored a
grand total of four points through the first two games of the
season, combined to score 39 points Saturday night. Freshman Jay
Jamieson (Big Sandy, MT) tallied 10 points with a pair of
3-pointers. He also grabbed four rebounds. Kerington Youmans (So., Atlanta, GA) added nine points and
three assists in 14 minutes. Braden Draggoo (Jr., Omak, WA) scored eight points, Drew
Arnold (Fr., Tempe, AZ) finished with seven, and Wacy
Weeks (Jr., Wolf Point, MT) totaled five.
Ohio Valley was led by 12 points from Eugene
Ruiz. He was 5-of-10 from the field. Sean Neal scored 11 points
off the bench, and Daniel finished with 10 points. Derrick
Whiteside, who scored 29 points on Friday, was held to just two
points.
The Yellowjackets return to action next
Saturday when they host Chadron State. The game, originally
scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. tip off, has been moved to 2:00 p.m. so
it doesn’t conflict with the Montana State/Wyoming “Border War”
game at the Metra that night.
