Yellowjackets Lose Second Straight at BYU-Hawaii (Feb. 19, 2005)

LAIE, HI – Montana State-Billings suffered
its second-straight 30 point loss Saturday, falling at BYU-Hawaii
118-84. The Seasiders ended the Yellowjackets’ eight game winning
streak on Thursday with a 115-84 win. Saturday’s loss dropped the
Jackets to 16-8 overall and 8-6 in the PacWest, while the
Seasiders improved to 15-7, 10-3.
MSU Billings returns home for a pair of
non-conference games next week. The Yellowjackets host MSU-Northern
on Thursday and Johnson & Wales on Saturday. Both games tip off
at 7:00 p.m. The Jackets wrap up the regular season with their
final PacWest Conference game at Western New Mexico on March 3.
On Thursday the Seasiders used a big second
half to pull away from the Yellowjackets. Saturday’s game saw an
explosive first half from BYU-Hawaii. The Seasiders opened the
game with a 21-10 run and never trailed after the second
possession. They built a 52-29 halftime advantage, hitting 67
percent of their shots from the field. The Jackets were 10-of-39
from the field in the first half and shot just 38 percent in the
game.
The Seasiders blew open the game early in the
second half, building their lead to as many as 44. MSU Billings
hit 13 second half 3-pointers, but couldn’t stop BYU-Hawaii
defensively. The Seasiders shot 70 percent from the field in the
second stanza and 69 percent for the game.
Justin Hassell led the Jackets with 23 points and eight
rebounds. He was 9-of-21 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point
range. Cameron Munoz finished with 19 points and seven assists. Buddy Windy Boy and Cody Samuelson each scored 15 points. Windy Boy hit five
3-pointers. Samuelson’s 15 points were a career high, as were his
three 3-pointers.
Carlin Hughes scored nine points and dished out eight
assists. Hassell, Hughes, Munoz, and Samuelson each had three
3-pointers. Jay Jamieson made one and scored three points.
BYU-Hawaii was led by Jake Chrisman’s 32
points and 10 rebounds. He was 13-of-16 from the field. Thomas
Watkins scored 22 points, making all four of his 3-point
attempts. Michael Stowell added 15 points. |
