Yellowjackets Run Past Hawaii Pacific, 112-89 (Jan. 22, 2005)

BILLINGS, MT – After surviving a second half
scare from Hawaii Pacific on Thursday night, Montana
State-Billings used its own second half surge to down the Sea
Warriors 112-89 on Saturday afternoon at Alterowitz Gym. The
Yellowjackets improved to 10-6 overall and 2-4 in the PacWest.
Hawaii Pacific dropped to 7-10, 1-6.
The Sea Warriors led for much of the first
half. The Jackets’ Carlin Hughes (Fr., Perth, Australia) hit a
3-pointer on the team’s first possession to give MSU Billings a
3-2 lead. The Yellowjackets didn’t lead again until there were
six minutes left in the half. Hawaii Pacific led by as many as
seven and there were four ties during that span.
Justin
Hassell’s (Sr., Brooklyn, NY) 3-point
play at 6:13 gave the Yellowjackets their second lead of the game
at 30-29. After Dante Sykes scored to regain the lead for HPU, Jonathan Wiley (So., Westlake Village, CA) hit a 3-pointer to give
MSU Billings a 33-31 advantage on the next possession. The
Jackets never trailed again in the game.
After opening a 49-39 halftime lead,
MSU Billings blew the game open in the first ten minutes of the
second half. Hassell’s jumper with 10:44 to play gave the Jackets
their first 20 point lead at 78-58. MSU Billings led by as many
as 30 late in the game, scoring 63 second half points.
Hassell and Cameron Munoz (Jr., Chino, CA)
shared the top scoring honors with 27 points. Hassell was
11-of-14 from the field and 4-of-4 from the line. He also dished
out five assists and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds in 28
minutes off the bench.
Munoz was 5-of-12 from 3-point range and
6-of-7 from the free throw line. His thirteenth point of the game
made him the twentieth player in school history to score at least
1,000 career points.
Freshman Lucas Walker (Launceston, Australia)
added 19 points after pouring in 32 in Thursday’s win. He was a
perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Buddy Windy Boy (Jr.,
Lodge Grass, MT) finished with 15 points, hitting 3-of-9 from
beyond the arc and 4-of-4 from the line. He also had a game-high
four steals and a blocked shot.
The Yellowjackets shot 90.3 percent from the
line and 50 percent from the field for the game. The Sea Warriors
attempted one more free throw than MSU Billings, but connected on
just 65.6 percent.
Wiley finished the game with eight points and
a career-high eight assists before fouling out late in the game.
Hughes added seven points and three assists. Cody Samuelson (So.,
Broadus, MT) chipped in five points and six rebounds in 19 minutes
of action. Freshman Drew Arnold (Tempe, AZ) added four points and
three rebounds in only eight minutes.
Hawaii Pacific was paced by Audrius Peciukas
who had a double-double of 24 points and 14 rebounds. He was
7-of-14 from the field and 8-of-11 from the line. Dante Sykes
finished with 18 points off the bench, handing out four assists.
Aleksander Jakovcjevic added 14 points.
The Yellowjackets continue their home stand
next Thursday and Saturday with PacWest Conference games against
Western New Mexico. Tip off Thursday is 7:00 p.m. Saturday’s
game will start at 2:00 p.m.
