Golf Teams Face Rocky in Billings Collegiate Cup (Oct. 3, 2004)
BILLINGS, MT – The MSU Billings golf
teams will begin a cross-town rivalry on Monday and
Tuesday when they face Rocky Mountain College in the first
Billings Collegiate Cup. The Yellowjackets are in just
their third year after the programs were added in 2002.
The event will be split into two
rounds in the fall and two rounds in the spring using a
match play format. Rocky will host the two fall rounds on
Monday and Tuesday at Peter Yegen Golf Club. The
Yellowjackets will host the spring rounds at The
Briarwood.
The first day of competition this
week will be four-ball play, and the second day will be
singles match play. In the spring, the first day will be
foursomes and the final day will be singles matches. The
spring dates will be determined at a later date.
Four-ball play is a match in which
each member of two-man teams play their own ball. Four
balls are in play per hole with each of the four players
recording a score on the hole. The team whose player
posts the best score on that hole wins the hole. Should
players from each team tie for the best score, the hole is
halved. On Monday, four two-man teams will vie for two
points in each match.
Singles play is a match in which one
player competes against another. A player wins the match
when he is up by more holes than there are holes remaining
to play. On Tuesday, eight singles will vie for one point
in each match. To win the team match, a team must earn 16
½ of a possible 32 points.
The pairings for the fall matches
will be determined Sunday night in a coaches meeting at
Peter Yegen. |
