Yellowjackets Pick up Women’s Soccer Win (October 5, 2002)
BILLINGS, MT – First half goals by from Margot Merrill-Johnson and Lacey Humbracht gave MSU Billings
its second women’s soccer win of the season Saturday
afternoon as the Yellowjackets shut out Jamestown
College 2-0 at Yellowjacket Field.
MSU Billings improved to 2-9 on
the season after capturing its first win since
September 7 when the Jackets defeated Wayne State
College. Jamestown fell to 6-8 after Saturday’s
loss to MSUB and a 4-0 loss at Rocky Mountain on
Friday.
Merrill-Johnson gave the
Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, scoring off a nice pass from Heidi Robertson.
It was Merrill-Johnson’s first goal of the season
and Robertson’s first assist. Just twelve minutes
later, freshman Lacey Humbracht tallied her first goal of the year after receiving a
long crossing pass from Mandy Reed. It was Reed’s
third assists and fifth point of the season.
The Yellowjackets dominated the
tempo of the game in the first 45 minutes,
out-shooting the Jimmies 11-5 in the first stanza.
Neither team mounted a significant threat in the
second half with both managing just four shots in
the period. Yellowjacket goalkeeper Cori Russell notched six saves in the game while Jamestown’s
Marlena Michaud stopped three shots.
MSU Billings will face Rocky
Mountain College on Thursday, October 10 at RMC.
The game is schedule for a 3:00 p.m. start. It will
be the second meeting between the teams this
season. Rocky prevailed 3-1 in the first match on
September 25. |
