Lady Jackets Drop Home Opener 2-1 in Overtime (August 30, 2002)
The University of
Minnesota–Morris scored in the 97th minute to edge Montana State University-Billings 2-1
in the 2002 women’s soccer season opener for both
squads. UM-Morris’s Jessica Rada netted a header
with 3:09 remaining in the first overtime to give
the Cougars the victory.
The Yellowjackets and Cougars
were playing in game one of the Inaugural MSU Billings
Cup Sponsored by Thrifty Car Rental. Game two will
be played Saturday at noon when MSU Billings faces
Metro State. UM-Morris and Metro State will then
face each other on Sunday in the final game of the
tournament.
Mari Sandom, who was credited
with the assist on the game-winning goal, scored the
first goal of the game at 7:37 of the first half,
giving UM-Morris a 1-0 lead. Erin Mahoney had the
assist. MSU Billings, which only suited 13 players
for the game, tied the game at 16:02 of the first
half when Heidi Robertson beat goalie Kaylee Marone
one-on-one for the score. Robertson was set up by a
pass from Kristen Johnson, who was credited with the
assist.
The score was tied 1-1 at
halftime and remained tied until Rada’s
game-winner. For the game, the Cougars out-shot the
Yellowjackets 16-5, with 10 shots on goal compared
to two for MSU Billings. Yellowjacket goalkeeper
Lacey Humbracht stopped eight shots on the day. |
