Yellowjacket Volleyball Team Sweeps Silverswords (October 22, 2002)
BILLINGS, MT – A career night for junior Kari Gerretsen led the MSU Billings Yellowjackets to a 3-0 sweep of Chaminade
Tuesday night. After being swept by the Pacific Region’s No. 5 ranked
team on Monday, MSUB (7-13, 2-5) turned the tables behind Gerretsen’s 20
kills.
Chaminade (14-4, 6-2) entered the weekend and ranked
5th in the Pacific Region poll. After the Silverswords
outplayed the Jackets in every facet on Monday, MSUB stepped on the court
like a team with something to prove on Tuesday, winning 30-26, 30-20,
34-32. The Yellowjackets captured the momentum early with solid defense. Cortney Metzler and Sandy Beal each finished the match with six block
assists.
Gerretsen tallied her 20 kills in 51 attempts with a
.255 hitting percentage. Her previous career-best was 18 against
Hawaii-Hilo on September 17. She had struggled in the past two matches,
but was on target for most of Tuesday’s match. Gerretsen also added 13
digs to notch a double-double.
Freshman Ashley Jones recorded double-digit kills for
the third straight match with her double-double performance of 10 kills
and 14 digs. Krissy Janney handed out 44 assists and libero Mandi Paulson finished with 18 digs.
The Silverswords made a run in game three, hitting
.259, but MSUB held on to the momentum. The Yellowjackets had four match
points before finally closing out the third game.
Chaminade was paced by PacWest Player of the Week
Kahala Kabalis, who had 17 kills and eight digs. Valasi Sepulona recorded
a match-high 20 digs and eight kills. Setter Janeen Waialae notched 37
assists.
MSU Billings next plays at Rocky Mountain College on
October 29 before traveling to Western New Mexico for matches on November
1 and 2. |
