Yellowjacket Softball Opens Season with Two Losses
at San Francisco (February 18,
2003)
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The
MSU Billings softball team opened the 2003 season
with a pair of losses at San Francisco State. The
Yellowjackets lost 2-0 and 4-2 in the afternoon
double-header.
In game one, the Gator’s Sonja
Garnett threw just the second no-hitter in SFSU
history to shut-out the Jackets 2-0. Garnett struck
out three and walked none over seven innings and was
just two Gator errors away from a perfect game.
Sophomore pitcher Joey Ehnes went the distance for
the Yellowjackets, giving up four hits and two
earned runs over six innings. She struck out six
and walked four.
MSU Billings led for much of
game two before falling 4-2. After giving up a
first inning run, pitcher Jordan Waverek helped her
own cause in the second by singling in Meghan
O’Donnell to tie the game. Waverek pitched six
innings for the Yellowjackets, giving up five hits
and four earned runs.
The Yellowjackets took a 2-1
lead in the third when Michelle Falsken grounded out
to second to plate Cami Rainey from third base.
Rainey reached on a bunt single. She then stole
second and advanced to third on a passed ball.
The Gators erupted for three
runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead.
Natalie Batista doubled off the wall to score Holly
Pearce. Rachel Darrow plated Batista with a single,
and then scored on a Michelle Villegas double. The
Yellowjackets were unable to score in the top of the
seventh as Garnett came in for SFSU to pick up the
save.
The Yellowjackets fell to 0-2
while the Gators improved to 6-11. MSU Billings
will open PacWest play on Friday and Saturday at
Hawaii Pacific. |
