Yellowjackets Dominate Flathead in Men’s Soccer Match (October 26, 2002)
BILLINGS, MT – Even though the game didn’t
count for their overall record, MSU Billings was happy to have a
strong performance at home as the Yellowjackets cruised to a 4-0
victory over Flathead Valley CC on Saturday. Four different
Yellowjackets found the net as MSUB out-shot FVCC 24-1 in the
game.
Freshman Jesse Spann put the
Yellowjackets on the board just 1:21 into the game on one of the
oddest plays of the season. Spann’s corner kick was caught by
FVCC goalkeeper Steven English, who then stepped back into the
goal. Spann was credited with the unassisted goal, giving MSUB
the only point it would need.
In the 25th minute, senior Aaron Wandler threaded a
pass through two defenders to Mark Cipolla, who then
beat the goalkeeper from 15 yards out. Cipolla is the
Yellowjackets’ leading scorer this season with 11 goals and 24
points.
In the 30th minute, FVCC committed
a foul in the penalty box, giving the Yellowjackets a penalty
shot. Wandler picked up his third point of the game when his
penalty kick found the lower left corner of the goal to give MSUB
a 3-0 lead. The Jackets finished the opening half with a 13-0
shot advantage.
MSU Billings dominated the second half as
well, out-shooting FVCC 11-1. Mike Gallegos scored the
Yellowjackets’ final goal of the game in the 51st minute off a pass from Tyler Garrett.
MSU Billings will play its final game of the
season when the Yellowjackets travel to the University of Mary on
November 1. Their season record remains at 6-10. |
