Yellowjackets Win Third Straight Soccer Game (September 26, 2002)
BILLINGS, MT – The Montana State
University-Billings men’s soccer team recorded its record third
consecutive victory on Thursday afternoon, defeating the
University of Mary 1-0 at Yellowjacket Field. Mark Cipolla scored
the game winning goal in the 68th minute to give the
Jackets the win.
“We didn’t play great today,” said first year
coach Doug Seigle, “but if we can win ugly, then imagine what we
will be able to do once our guys learn our system and start to
play together better.”
Cipolla leads the Yellowjackets with nine
goals and 19 points. Already this year he has recorded two hat
tricks. After receiving a feed from Brian Palmer, Cipolla
dribbled past a defender and beat the goalie one-on-one for the
deciding goal.
MSU Billings improved to 4-4 on the season
after starting 1-4. They won the Northwest Nazarene Tournament
last weekend by going 2-0. Last year the Yellowjackets won two
straight games on two different occasions.
Freshman goalkeeper Yacine Zerizef picked up
his second win in three decisions this year. In 315 minutes he
has a goals-against average of 1.43 and a save percentage of
.706. Those numbers were bolstered against Mary with the
Yellowjackets’ first shutout of the season and Zerizef’s four
saves. Three of those saves came late in the second half as the
Marauders pressed to tie the game.
The Yellowjackets travel to Washington on
Saturday to face Western Washington University. From there they
will make the drive to Burnaby, British Columbia to take on Simon
Fraser. |
