MSUB Men’s Soccer Handed First Loss of the Year
SALT LAKE CITY – The Montana
State University-Billings men’s soccer team suffered
its first defeat of the season, falling to Concordia
University-Irvine 5-1. The Yellowjackets fell to
1-1 at the season-opening tournament hosted by
Westminster College.
MSU Billings started the game
slowly, falling behind 3-0 in the first half. In
the 57th minute, the Jackets’ Mark
Cipolla scored on a penalty kick, drawing MSUB to
within 3-1. However, just 10 minutes later
CU-Irvine scored on a penalty kick of its own to
take a 4-1 lead. In a physical contest, the two
teams combined for 25 fouls and four yellow cards.
For the game, CU-Irvine
out-shot the Yellowjackets 20-14. MSUB goalie Kevin
Petriz recorded nine saves in the losing effort.
MSU Billings will face
Westminster on Sunday for their third game of the
tournament. A victory would give the Yellowjackets
at least a tie for the tournament title.
